1、Senate Regulations for Postgraduate Taught Programmes of Study Modular Programmes1.GENERALThese regulations are to be read in conjunction with Senate Assessment Regulations for Taught Programmes of Study.2.DEFINITIONSThe following definitions shall apply in respect of these Regulations:Assessment: F

2、orms of Assessment fall into one of two types:Formative Assessment(s): For the purpose of these Regulations, Formative Assessment is defined as Assessment that does not contribute to the final award of Credit.Summative Assessment(s): For the purpose of these Regulations, Summative Assessment is defi

3、ned as that which measures whether a student has achieved the learning outcomes for a defined unit of learning, and at what standard of performance. Summative Assessment contributes to the award of Credit.Methods of Assessment (Class Test, Coursework Assessment, Examination, Practical-Based Examinat

4、ion) are defined in Senate Assessment Regulations for Taught Programmes of Study.Assessment Criteria: A description of what the learner is expected to achieve in order to demonstrate that the Module Learning Outcomes have been met.Calendar Year: A period of twelve consecutive months.Core Module: A M

5、odule which, in accordance with the Programme Regulations for a particular Programme of Study, is compulsory for students registered on that programme or on a route within that programme. Boards of Studies may recommend that a Module shall be a Core Module for one or more Programmes of Study and/or

6、routes and an Option Module for one or more programmes and/or routes.Co-requisite(s): Modules which, in accordance with the Programme Regulations, must be studied concurrently by students registered on that programme or on a route within that programme.CQFW: Credit and Qualifications Framework for W

7、ales: a framework and source of specification and guidance covering all accredited post-16 education in Wales.Credit(s): The value of a unit of study where each single Module shall normally have a value of ten Credits.Credit Level: The designation of a Module or Credit within a given Programme of St

8、udy which shall be defined as follows:Level HE Three: Modules, the standard of which is appropriate to the award of an Honours Degree (CQFW Level 6);Level M: Modules, the standard of which is appropriate to the award of a Masters Degree (CQFW Level 7).Dissertation: A bound, submitted work, of not mo

9、re than 20,000 words, embodying the methods and results of a research project, or a non-standard form of submission, approved as an equivalent alternative by the Graduate Development Committee in respect of particular Programmes of Study or candidature. The Dissertation shall be submitted for examin

10、ation.Exit-point Qualification: A Postgraduate Certificate and/or Postgraduate Diploma qualification specified in the Programme Regulations which may be awarded to a student who successfully completes one or more Stages of a Programme of Study but only where:(i)the student does not progress to the n

11、ext Stage or final award, or (ii)the student fails the next Stage or the final award and is unable for whatever reason to retrieve the failure.Final Assessment: The process by which Module Assessments are combined to determine a final award and classification, if any.Free-Standing Module(s): Subject

12、 to the Programme Regulations, a Module which may be available to any student or identified group of students registered on the Programme of Study. Learning Outcomes: Statements of what a learner can be expected to know, understand and/or do as a result of a learning experience.Module(s): A separate

13、 identifiable component of learning, at a designated Level of study which shall comprise a minimum of one hundred study hours per ten Credits including associated contact hours, individual study and Assessment. Modules may be delivered in units of 10-Credit, 15-Credit, 20-Credit, 30-Credit or 40-Cre

14、dit modules, but no Module shall be greater than a 40-Credit Module or extend for more than one Session, save in respect of projects and dissertations and of periods of professional/industrial training or study/work experience abroad.Module Assessment: The processes by which it is ascertained whethe

15、r, and at what standard of performance, a Module has been completed to be eligible for the award of Credit.Option Module(s): A Module which is named within the Programme Regulations and which is optional for students registered on the Programme(s) of Study concerned. Boards of Studies may recommend

16、that a module shall be an Option Module for one or more programme(s) or route(s) and core for other programmes or route(s). The availability of Option Modules shall be subject to any relevant constraints.Fieldwork: Work associated with one or more specified Module(s) which may be pursued at a locati

17、on away from the University. Fieldwork assignments may be compulsory and may also require the submission of related work which contributes to the overall assessment of the Module(s) concerned. Any fieldwork may be scheduled either within the approved Semester dates, or at other times.Precursor: A Mo

18、dule, the study hours of which a student shall be required to have completed in order to proceed to a subsequent specified Module(s), but for which Credit may not necessarily have been awarded.Prerequisite(s): A Module in which a student shall be required to have received Credit in order to proceed

19、to a subsequent specified Module or Modules.Programme(s) of Study: A schedule of approved Modules leading to a designated award.Programme Pathway: The approved Modules within a Programme of Study pursued by an individual student.Programme Regulations: The regulations governing one or more specified

20、Programme(s) of Study.Route: A suite of Modules specified in Programme Regulations from which a student may derive part or all of his/her Programme Pathway.Semester: As determined by Council on the advice of Senate, a specified period of study normally including any in-course assessment and/or Class

21、 Test(s).Session: One academic year, as determined by Council on the advice of Senate.Stage: Each Programme of Study leading to a Masters Degree shall be divided into two or three stages as follows:Two StageThree StagePostgraduate Diploma;Postgraduate Certificate;Masters Degree.Postgraduate Diploma;

22、Masters Degree.Each programme of study leading to a Postgraduate Diploma shall be divided into one or two stages as follows:One StageTwo StagePostgraduate Diploma;Postgraduate Certificate;Postgraduate Diploma.Each programme of study leading to a Postgraduate Certificate shall comprise one Stage.Term

23、: As determined by Council on the advice of Senate, a specified period of study normally including any in-course assessment and/or Class Test(s).University: Cardiff University.(For the purpose of these regulations, any reference to a Semester will be deemed to include reference to a Term.)3.ADMISSIO

24、N3.1An applicant for admission to a Taught Postgraduate Programme of Study shall be required:3.1.1to meet the conditions of the University General Entrance Requirement; and3.1.2to meet the particular requirements for the Programme of Study applied for, as specified in the relevant Programme Regulati

25、ons.3.2The decision whether an applicant shall be admitted to a Programme of Study shall rest with the relevant Head of School, always provided that the decision is in accordance with the Universitys entry requirements. In addition, Heads of Schools shall retain the right to determine the maximum or

26、 minimum intake for individual Modules, providing that an applicant may not be denied admission to any Core Module which contributes to the Programme of Study for which s/he is registered.3.3An individual verification of the academic qualifications obtained prior to entry may be undertaken, either d

27、uring the admission process or following enrolment as a student. As part of this verification, applicants/students may be required to provide certification to verify their academic qualifications. The University reserves the right to refuse admission or apply the Student Disciplinary Procedure if cl

28、ear and complete certification for such verification is not provided on request. 4.PROGRAMME REGULATIONS4.1 For each approved postgraduate Programme of Study, there shall be approved Programme Regulations in a form approved by Senate which shall include, inter alia:Entry Requirements;Structure of th

29、e Programme;A Module Timetable for each year of the programme;Rules on Assessment, Progression and Award.4.2The inclusion of one or more Free-Standing Modules within the Programme Regulations for a Programme of Study shall be at the discretion of the School Board. A School Board may delegate this to

30、 the Board of Studies which has responsibility for that programme and on the basis of such conditions as the Board may decide to impose.4.3 Where a School Board/Board of Studies permits students on Programmes of Study for which it is responsible to pursue one or more Free-Standing Modules, the Board

31、 shall further determine the weighting of such Modules in determining the final award.5.MODULES 5.1Where a Module is available for more than one Programme of Study, its status as a Core Module, Option Module or Free-Standing Module may vary between programmes. The Credit Level of a Module may not va

32、ry.5.2No single Module shall be sub-divided.5.3Precursors, Prerequisites and/or Co-requisites may be defined for any Module or for a Module in a specified programme.5.4The Head of School responsible for the management of a Module shall determine whether it shall be made available to students registe

33、red on other programmes as a Free-Standing Module and, if it is, shall specify any minimum or maximum intake levels or other restrictions.5.5Any Fieldwork requirements shall form part or all of one or more specified Modules subject to any timetabling or other constraints.5.6Project Modules may be co

34、mbined into units of study which are greater than four Modules.5.7All Dissertations shall be at least equal to six Modules (60 credits) at level M and shall not exceed 20,000 words in length.6.STRUCTURE 6.1The structure of modular Programmes of Study shall be set out in Programme Regulations which s

35、hall as a minimum accord with the following requirements:6.1.1a modular Programme of Study leading to a Postgraduate Certificate (Masters Level, CQFW credit level 7) shall consist of Modules at least to the value of 60 Credits of which no more than 20 Credits shall be at Level HE Three (CQFW level 6

36、);6.1.2a modular Programme of Study leading to a Postgraduate Diploma (Masters Level, CQFW credit level 7) shall consist of Modules at least to the value of 120 Credits of which no more than 30 Credits shall be at Level HE Three (CQFW level 6);6.1.3a modular Programme of Study leading to the award o

37、f a Masters Degree (Masters Level, CQFW credit level 7) shall consist of Modules at least to the value of 180 credits which shall include a Dissertation of at least 60 credits at Level M (CQFW level 7), and of which no more than 30 creditsshall be at Level HE Three (CQFW level 6);6.1.4a modular Prog

38、ramme of Study leading to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate, or a Postgraduate Diploma, or a Masters Degree shall include no Modules which are at a level less than Level HE Three (CQFW level 6);6.1.5A Graduate Diploma (Honours (H) Level (HEQF); CQFW credit level 6) may, in accordance with the

39、appropriate Programme Regulations, be awarded as an exit-point award to a student admitted to a postgraduate programme of study which includes the initial and additional completion of modules to the value of 120 credits including a minimum of 90 Credits at Level Three and no more than 30 Credits at

40、Level Two.6.1.6no student may be permitted or required to pursue and/or be assessed in Modules to the value of:more than 150 Credits in any session; andmore than 210 Credits in any calendar year.6.2 Entry with Advanced Standing and Module Exemptions6.2.1Heads of Schools shall be authorised to admit

41、students with advanced standing.6.2.2Heads of Schools shall be authorised to exempt students from specified Modules to a maximum of one-third of the Credits constituting a Programme of Study provided always that the structure of the Programme of Study in its entirety complies with the stipulations o

42、f 6.1.1 6.1.4 above.6.2.3Where a student is granted admission with advanced standing or exemption from a Module in accordance with 6.2.1 above, s/he shall be awarded the appropriate number of Credits. In determining the Final Assessment an Examining Board shall include only those relevant Modules wh

43、ich the student has attempted as a registered student of the University.6.3Programme Pathway6.3.1All students shall be required to register for their Programme Pathway at the start of the first Semester of attendance.6.3.2Subject to 6.3.3 below, following registration a student may seek the approval

44、 of the Head of School to amend his/her Programme Pathway.6.3.3No student shall be permitted to change his/her Programme Pathway for that Semester later than:.1three weeks after the start of his/her first Semester at the University; or.2two weeks after the start of any other Semester.6.3.4No student

45、 shall be permitted to change his/her Programme Pathway without the formal approval of the Head of School responsible for the Programme of Study.6.3.5No student may undertake additional Modules outside of his/her approved Programme Regulations without the prior formal approval of the Head of School

46、responsible for the Programme of Study.6.4Programme Completion6.4.1A maximum and/or minimum time-limit for completion of a Programme of Study may be stipulated in the Programme Regulations.6.4.2The due date for submission of the Dissertation for Masters programmes shall be as approved by Senate, or

47、as otherwise stipulated in the Programme Regulations. For full-time, one-year Programmes of Study, the due date shall be no more than 50 weeks from the date of initial registration.6.4.3If a Masters Degree candidate fails to submit a Dissertation by the due date stipulated s/he will be awarded a mar

48、k of zero for the Dissertation.7.ASSESSMENT7.1In accordance with the definitions provided in Senate Assessment Regulations for Taught Programmes of Study (Methods of Assessment), all Modules shall be assessed either:7.1.1by Coursework Assessment conducted during the Semester(s) in which the Module(s

49、) is/are completed; or7.1.2by Examination during an Examination Period; or7.1.3by one or more Class Tests conducted during the Semester(s) in which the Module(s) is/are completed; or7.1.4by Practical-based Examination, organised by the relevant School;7.1.5by a combination of any of 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 7.

50、1.3 and 7.1.4 above.7.2The Method of Assessment for each Module, including the weighting for each element of the Assessment, shall be defined in the Programme Regulations and notified to each student at the beginning of the first Semester of attendance in each year of the Programme of Study.7.3 The

51、mark achieved by each student in each Module shall be determined by the relevant Examining Board.7.4The pass mark in each Module shall be 50%.7.5A student who passes a Module in which s/he has previously failed shall be credited with no greater than the pass mark.7.6A student who has been awarded Cr

52、edit in a Module shall not be permitted to be re-assessed in that Module with a view to improving his/her mark. 8.DETERMINATION OF MODULE AND STAGE RESULTS8.1As appropriate to the structure and/or mode of the programme, a Programme Examining Board or Composite Examining Board shall meet at the end o

53、f each Stage, Session or Calendar Year, to consider:8.1.1the performance of students in all Modules completed during the Stage, Session or Calendar Year and shall take into consideration all components of the Module Assessment; and8.1.2the progression and/or Final Assessment of students.8.2Determina

54、tion of Module Result8.2.1A Programme Examining Board or Composite Examining Board which meets to consider the performance of each student in each Module shall determine whether:.1the student has passed the Module; or.2the student has failed the Module; or.3the student has been absent from the Asses

55、sment on reasonable medical or compassionate grounds. In such cases, the Examining Board shall deal with the student in accordance with the Senate Assessment Regulations.8.2.2An Examining Board has the discretion to modify a students mark in one or more Modules in any stage of a students Programme o

56、f Study.8.3 Determination of Stage Results and Progression8.3.1No student shall be permitted to proceed from the Postgraduate Certificate to the Postgraduate Diploma Stage of a Programme of Study unless s/he has achieved at least 60 Credits or such higher number of Credits as may be required by the

57、Programme Regulations.8.3.2No student shall be permitted to proceed from the Postgraduate Diploma Stage to Masters Degree Stage of a programme of study unless s/he has achieved at least 120 Credits or such higher number of Credits as may be required by the Programme Regulations.8.3.3 A student may,

58、however, with the Head of Schools approval, begin supervised or unsupervised preparatory work on the Dissertation prior to completion of the Postgraduate Diploma Stage, but may not submit work for examination unless and until the Diploma Stage of the programme has been passed.8.3.4On the basis of a

59、Programme Examining Board or Composite Examining Boards determination of the result of each student in each Module, a Programme Examining Board or Composite Examining Board shall as appropriate determine, in accordance with the approved Programme Regulations, whether:.1the student shall be permitted

60、 to proceed to the next academic stage of the Programme of Study and, as appropriate to the structure of the programme, shall be eligible to receive any Exit-point Qualification; .2the student shall not be permitted to proceed to the next academic stage of the Programme of Study and, as appropriate
