Asearlyasaseniormiddleschoolstudent,IheldingreatadorationofChengningYangandTsung-daoLee,twomostprominentChinese-bornphysiciststohavewonNobelPrizes.Thenceforward,IhavecherishedtheconstantaspirationofbecomingarenownedphysicistmyselfthewaythesetwoNobellaureatesdid.Evenonedecadelater,IcanstillrecallthefirstexperimentIdidinthephysicscourse.Whenatransmitterinonecornerofthelabwasconnectedwithelectricity,alittlebulbconnectedtoareceptionantenna

inanothercornerlitup.Thoughbynomeansdazzlinginitself,thislightwithitsstunningmagicusheredmeasifintoawonderland,aworldrepletewithintriguingmysteriesthatonlybelongtotherealmofphysics.IbelievedthatIbelongedtothisspecialworld.ThatmarkedtheturningpointinmylifeandwithitIcommencedmyquestsfor

Withanunusuallysolidfoundationinphysicslaidduringseniormiddleschool(IreceivedstraightA’sinvirtuallyeveryphysicsexam),IenteredthePhysicsDepartmentofDalianMarineUniversity.BythetimeIgraduatedinfouryears,whichcouldonlybedescribedastransitory,IfoundthatIhadbecomeemotionallyattachedtothisdiscipline.Realizingthatundergraduatestudieshadonlyexposedmetotherelativelyfundamentalknowledgeofthissubject,IembarkedonaMaster’sprogram,throughverycompetitiveentranceexaminations,infiber-opticalcommunicationattheCollegeofTelecommunicationEngineering,theUniversityofBeijingPostsandTelecommunications(UBPT).

ThemomentIcameintocontactwiththisbrand-newfieldrepresentedbytelecommunications(Chinatendstolagbehindwesterncountriesinscientificandtechnologicaldevelopinanygivenfieldbymanyyearsorevendecades),Iwasfilledwithexcitementoverthewonderfulprospectthatthisindustrycouldenjoy. Iyearnedtobesatiatedwithnewconcepts,newknowledge,andnewexpertiseandIdevotedmyselftomyprogramwithindefatigableefforts.Tomyregret,aftercompletingourshareofresearchresponsibilitiesinthe863Projectunderthedirectionofmysupervisor,wehadnofurtheropportunitiestoparticipateinanymeaningfulprojects.IhadnoalternativebuttoduplicatetheNonlinearOpticalLoopMirroranditsApplicationsinOTDMSystemwhichhadalreadybeencompletedbyscientistsabroadandtoverifytheirresearchfindingsbymeansofcomputersimulations.Itwaspreciselythosebackwardresearchconditionsandthelackofchallengingprojectsthatpromptedmetogeneratetheideaofseekingfurtherstudiesabroad.Ibelievedthatthestatusquowouldimposeseriousrestrictionsonthedevelopmentofmyintellectualcapacitiesandontheexploitationofmyacademicpotential.

ButfortwoyearsbeforeIcouldbringmyoverseasstudiesintoareality,Iworkedattheleadingenterpriseinthecountry’stelecommunicationsindustry—ChinaTelecomBeijingBranchCompany.Asbroadbandnetworksengineerandastechnicalsupportengineer,Iwasresponsibleforthedesignandoperationoffourmajorprojects—ConstructionofBroadbandIntegrateServicesExperimentalNetwork,ExperimentandConstructionofBroadbandDSLNetworkinBeijing,TestofTimingClockofBeijingSDHNetworksandEquipmentSelectionforBeijingCDMAWirelessNetwork.MydistinguishedworkperformanceresultedinmybeingsenttoMarconiCompany’sAmericanheadquarterstoreceiveprofessionaltrainingsinATMtechnology.Nevertheless,Istillfeltthatinacompanyenvironmentworkwasroutinizedandtechnologylackedinnovativeness,fallingfarshortofmypassionsandambitions.Theworkwasmeaningfulonlytotheextentofservingasameansoflivelihood.Refusingtobemiredinamediocrecondition,IdecidedthatthetimehadcomeformetopursueresearchworkthatIhadalwaysloved. Relyingonmysolidfoundationinphysics,mywell-trainedexperimentalskillsandhands-onabilitiesthatIdevelopedovertheheretoforestudiesandwork,IsucceededinenteringtheUniversityofTexasatArlington(UTA).Inthesuperiorlaboratoryconditions,forthefirsttimeinmylifeIhadaproudfeelingofbeinginvolvedinrealscientificresearch.WhenIseehowmyinspirationsturnintorealityinthelaboratory,onceagainforthefirsttimeinmylifeIfeelthatIamcreatingakindofwealthfarmorepreciousandvaluablethanmoney–knowledge.IrealizedthatIhadmadeanabsolutelycorrectdecisiontocometotheUnitedStates.AttheCenterofNanostructureMaterialsandQuantumDeviceFabricationandElectroOpticalResearchCenter,Ihavedonetwoyearscourseworkandoneyearandhalflabresearch.Theyhavesignificantlyenhancedmyabilitytosolveresearchproblemsindependently.Sincelastyear,IhaveconductedextensiveexperimentsinthefieldofnanotechnologyandSemiconductorandoptoelectronicelements.AlthoughtheapproachesandsolutionsIgenerateduringthoseexperimentsfrequentlydifferfromthoseofmysupervisor’sinmanyimportantaspects,Ihavemeritedpositivecommentsfromhim.Iamfullyconfidentthatbytheendofthisyearmyresearcheffortswouldcomeintofullfruition.

Nevertheless,Istillfeeldiscontented.Inretrospect,Idevelopedacommitmenttoscientificresearchveryearlyandhaveperseveredunderthespiritofthiscommitment.AftermyarrivalintheUnitedStates,Irealizedthatthereistremendousresearchpotentialinmetobetapped.AllIneedtodoistofindanappropriateacademicenvironment.EvenUTAdisappointsmeinthatIhavebeenkeptwaitingfornearlyfouryearbeforeIcouldembarkonamajorresearchprojectthatpromisesimportantresearchfindings. IhavecometotheconclusionthatwhetherinChinaorintheUnitedStatesitissimplyawasteoftimepassivelywaitingforresearchprojects.Consequently,thebestcourseofactionformetotakeistopursueseekaPh.D.programatoneofthetopAmericanuniversities.

TheUniversityof###comesontopofmyprioritiesbecauseitisatoprankinguniversityintheUnitedStatesitselfandintheentireworld.InthefieldofElectricalEngineering,inparticular,itenjoysanunparalleledposition.Itoffersmanyresearch-intenseprogramsandtheresearchenvironmentisimpeccable.IamdeeplyawarethatforapersonwhoseeksexcellenceandwhowishestoachievesomeinnovativeresearchresultsinElectricalEngineering,itisimperativethatheorsheplungeintoanenvironmentwhichisaschallengingandcompetitiveasitisstimulating,promisingtherealizationof
