Buttherealcostwasevengreater.NotonlydidpatientsstoptakingVioxxbut,doctorssay,manypeoplestoppedtakingtheirothermedicines,too-sometimesputtingtheirhealthatseriousrisk.

Duringthetan-yearperiodbetween1994and2004,theFDAapproved321completelynewdrugs(thisdoesn'tincludeapprovalsforchangestoexistingmedicines),bringingthetotaltomorethan10,000drugproductsonthemarket.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsofsafety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart-valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartarrhythmias).ButtheVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikenoother.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meals",andtheyexpectedthemtobesafe,too,especiallywhentheycostsomuch.Prescriptiondrugsaccountfor,somesay,thefastestgrowingsegment(aboutone-tenth)ofallhealthexpenditures,withsomespecialtydrugscostinghundredsofdollarsperdose.
"WithVioxx,therealshockandoutragecamewhentherewasasuggestionthatpeopleinauthoritymayhaveknownabouttheseharmfulsideeffectsandnotsharedthemwithdoctorsorthepublic,"saysAnneWoodbury,chiefhealthadvocatefortheCenterforHealthTransformation,athinktankfoundedbyNewtGingrich.Itmadepeoplequestiontheirfaithinthepharmaceuticalindustry,federalregulatorsandphysicians-thosewetrusttomakesureourdrugsaresafe.Before,takinganewlyprescribedpillwithaslugofwaterwasasroutineasbrushingyourteeth.Formanypeople,thisisnolongerthecase.
