$43,200.peoplefeel“squeezed”becausetheirrisingincomesoftendon'tsatisfytheir
risingwants-forbiggerhomes,morehealthcare,moreeducation,fasterInternet

Theothergreatfrustrationisthatithasnoteliminatedinsecurity.Peopleregardjob
stabilityaspartoftheirstandardofliving.Ascorporatelayoffsincreased,thatparthas

masterofthedomesticarts.ThetypicalrefinedJapanesewomanexcelsinmodesty
anddelicacy;she“treadssoftly(谨言慎行)intheworld,“elevatingfemininebeauty
andgracetoanartform.
Nowadays,itiscommonlyobservedthatyoungwomenarenotconformingtothe
femininelinguistic(语言的)ideal.Theyareusingfeweroftheverydeferential
“women's"forms,andevenusingthefewstrongformsthatareknowas"men'
s.”This,ofcourse,attractsconsiderableattentionandhasledtoanoutcryinthe
Japanesemediaagainstthedefeminizationofwomen'slanguage.Indeed,wedidn't
hearabout"men'slanguage“untilpeoplebegantorespondtogirls'appropriationof
formsnormallyreservedforboysandmen.Thereisconsiderablesentimentaboutthe
“corruption“ofwomen'slanguage-whichofcourseisviewedaspartofthelossof
feminineidealsandmorality-andthissentimentiscrystallizedbynationwide
opinionpollsthatareregularlycarriedoutbythemedia.
YoshikoMatsumotohasarguedthatyoungwomenprobablyneverusedasmanyof
thehighlydeferentialformsasolderwomen.Thishighlypolitestyleisnodoubt
somethingthatyoungwomenhavebeenexpectedto“growinto^^一afterall,itis
assignnotsimplyoffemininity,butofmaturityandrefinement,anditsusecouldbe
takentoindicateachangeinthenatureofone'ssocialrelationsaswell.Onemight
wellimaginelittlegirlsusingexceedinglypoliteformswhenplayinghouseor
imitatingolderwomen—inafashionanalogoustolittlegirls'useofahigh-pitched

ThefactthatyoungJapanesewomenareusinglessdeferentiallanguageisasuresign
ofchange-ofsocialchangeandoflinguisticchange.Butitismostcertainlynota
signofthe“masculization“ofgirls.Insomeinstances,itmaybeasignthatgirlsare
makingthesameclaimtoauthorityasboysandmen,butthatisverydifferentfrom
sayingthattheyaretryingtobe“masculine."KatsueReynoldshasarguedthatgirls
nowadaysareusingmoreassertivelanguagestrategiesinordertobeabletocompete
withboysinschoolsandout.Socialchangealsobringsnotsimplydifferentpositions
forwomenandgirls,butdifferentrelationstolifestages,andadolescentgirlsare
participatinginnewsubculturalforms.Thuswhatmay,toanolderspeaker,seemlike
