ash.
Inthenewstudy,co-authorGallellousedX-raytodeterminetheelementalcompositionofbones.Histeam
examinedsevenvictimmodelsfromPompeii.SixwererecoveredfromacitygatecalledPortaNola,theseventhwas
foundintheruinsofabathhouse.ThePortaNolabodieswerepositionedontopofathicklayerofpumice(轻石),
whichsuggeststheyhadattemptedtoescapeafterthepumicehadstoppedfalling.
Henotesthatthestudyclaiminginstantdeathanalyzedremainsfromtheneighbouringtown,whichwasalso
destroyedinthe79C.E.eruption.Manyofthesevictimswereseeninarigid“boxerposition”,whichischaracteristic
ofrapiddeathbyvaporization.Thebodiesexaminedinthisstudy,however,layinarelaxedposition,whichsuggests
aslowdeathfromchokeorexhaustion.Impressionsshowsomevictimscoveredthemselveswithclothes,tryingto
avoidbreathinginash.
Ifsmorelikely,Gallellosays,thatthevictimsdiedofchokeduringalowertemperaturepyroclastic(火山碎屑
的)flowandwereburiedunderalayerofvolcanicash.Onlylater,afterdeath,didhighertemperaturegasandlava
