themselves.Herblog,shesays,isdedicatedtosensibleparenting.t4AtFreeRangeKids,webelieveinsafekids.We

believeincarseatsandsafetybelts.WedoNOTbelievethateverytimeschool-agechildrengooutside,theyneeda

securityguard.^^

Sowhyaresomeparentssonervousaboutlettingtheirchildrenoutoftheirsight?Arecitiesandtownslesssafe

andkidsmorevulnerabletocrimeslikechildkidnapandsexualabusethantheywereinpreviousgenerations?

Notexactly.NewYorkCity,forinstance,issaferthanit'severbeen;it'sranked36thincrimeamongall

Americancities.Nationwide,stringerkidnapsareextremelyrare;there'saone-in-a-millionchanceachildwillbe

takenbyastranger,accordingtotheJusticeDepartment.And90percentofsexualabusecasesarecommittedby

someonethechildknows.Mortalityratesfromallcauses,includingdiseaseandaccidents,forAmericanchildrenare

lowernowthantheywere25years'ago.AccordingtoChildTrends,anonprofitresearchgroup,between1980and

2003deathratesdroppedby44percentforchildrenaged5to14and32percentforteensaged15to19.

Thenthere'sthewholequestionofwhethermodernparentsaremorewatchfulandnervousaboutsafetythan

previousgenerations.Yes,someare.PartoftheproblemisthatwithwalltowallInternetandcablenews,every

missingchildcasegetssomuchairtimethatit'snotsurprisingevennormalparentalanxietycanbeamplified.And

manymiddle-classparentshavegottenusedtomanagingtheirchildren'stimeandshuttlingthemtovariousenriching

activities,sotheideaoflettingthemoutontheirowncanseemlikearisk.Backin1972,whenmanyoftoday's

parentswerekids,87percentofchildrenwholivedwithinamileofschoolwalkedorbikedeveryday.Buttoday,the

CentersforDiseaseControlreportthatonly13percentofchildrenbike,walkorotherwisetthemselvestoschool.

Theextrasupervisionisbothacityandasuburbphenomenon.Parentsareworriedaboutcrime,andtheyare

worriedaboutkidsgettingcaughtintrafficinacitythat'snotusedtopedestrians.Ontheotherhand,therearestill

plentyofkidswhoseparentsgivethemalotofindependence,bychoiceorbynecessity.TheAfterSchoolAlliance

findsthatmorethan14millionkidsaged5to17areresponsiblefortakingcareofthemselvesafterschool.Only6.5

millionkidsparticipateinorganizedprograms.uManychildrenwhohaveworkingparentshavetotakethesubwayor
