Samuelsonfirsttriedwaterskiingwhileridinghisaquaplane,alarge,flatboardpulledbehindhisbrother's

boat.OnJune28,1922,heskiedforseveralyardsthisway.Inthedaysthatfollowed,Samuelsontrieddifferent

approaches.Inmostofhisattempts,hestartedwithhisskislevelwithorbelowthewaterline;butbythetimehis

recordedthenumberandkindsofpollinatorsthewildflowersattractedandfoundpopulationsofbees,beetles,

butterflies,moths,andmorehadincreasedon-site------evenastheycontinueddecliningelsewhereintheU.S.

Humans9pesticideuse,greenhousegasemissionsandhabitatdestructionhavecausedmasspollinator

die-offs.Monarchbutterflynumbers,forexample,havedecreasedby80percentnationwideinthepasttwodecades,

andaccordingtotheCenterforBiologicalDiversity's2017report,nearlyoneinfournativebeespeciesis

endangeredandatincreasingriskofextinction.Furtherbiglosseswouldbedisastrousforecosystemsand

agriculture:75percentofNorthAmericanplantspeciesrelyonpollinators.

Thefederalgovernment'senergygoalsrequireseveralmillionhectaresforsolarenergy,withmorethan80

percentoftheprojectsplannedforformeragriculturalland;seedingitthiswaycouldhelpsaveendangered

themoststunninggrowth,withtheirpopulationincreasing20timesbythestudy'send.Monarchbutterfliesalso

increasedinnumberandflutteredtheirdottedwingsacrossthesites.Twiceasmanybeesvisitedsoybeanfields

closetothesolarsitesasfieldsfartheraway,makingthenearbyplots5gainscomparabletothoseofneighboring
