Thisyear'smeeting,whichstartsonJan.23,mightbealittle

different.Thoughtsmaybeinthevalleyratherthanthehills.A

yearago,subprimehadnotenteredthelexiconofthenightlynews,

andmostAmericansprobablythoughtthat"creditcrunch"wasa

breakfastcereal.Weallknowbetternow.Inthewakeofthereport

thatDecember,sUSunemploymentratehadjumpedto5%,thehighest

levelintwoyears,theBushAdministrationandCongress,Republicans

andDemocrats,startedfallingoverthemselvestryingtofinda

politicallyacceptablestimuluspackage.Witharecessioninthe

Americaneconomylookingtobeimminent,thetirelesslocomotiveof

“longboom"sincetheFedstartedtosqueezeinflationoutofthe

systemin1979.Fornearly30years,Taylorpointsout,thefew

downturnstheUShassufferedhave,inhistoricalterms,beenboth

shortandshallow.EvenmoreextraordinaryisthetaleoutsidetheUS

AccordingtotheWorldBank'srecentGlobalEconomicProspectsreport,

globalgrowthin2007was3.6%,downalittlefrom3.9%in2006.But

amongdevelopingeconomies,growthwasaremarkable7.4%,thefifth

Howdidtheworldcometothishappyposition?Youcanlistthe

usualreasons:twodecadesofdecentmacroeconomicpolicymaking,the

triumphofmarketsandthecollapseofcommandeconomies,the

disseminationoftransformingtechnologiesandtoolssuchasthe

Internet,andopentradingsystems.Allofthesearetheattributes

thatcombinetoformthatmuchdiscussedphenomenon:globalization.

Butinthisspecialreport,welookatoneoverlookedaspectofa
