peoplereportusingabbreviationsand84%believeothersdon'tmindthem,theresearch

tellingly,only15.8%ofparticipantscorrectlypredictedthisnegativeimpact,while80%

assumedotherswouldbeindifferenttoabbreviations.

DavidFangatStanfordUniversityandhiscolleaguesranthestudiestoexplorethe

impactofabbreviationsindifferentmessagingscenarios(情景).Theyexaminedover

200,000conversationsfrom686usersspanning37countriesandfivecontinents.

Researcherscalculatedthepercentageofabbreviationsparticipantsusedintheirmessages

Theydiscoveredaclearpattern:conversationscontainingmoreabbreviationsconsistently

diedoutfaster.

throughme—andthenrealityhit.Iwasnowsolelyresponsibleforthedog,thevehicle

andthecampertrailerstillsetupbackatthecampsite.Packingupthetrailerwasatwo-

personjob.Myfamilyandfriendswere4,000kmawayinWesternAustralia.Andmydog

neededawalk!

Thenextday,newneighboursarrivedatthecampsite.Exhaustedandworried,Imanaged

asmallsmileasamannamedSamsaidhelloandbegansettingupwithhiswife.Iwondered

whattheythought—asolowomanwithadog,nopartnerinsight,andacampertrailer

fullofgear(齿轮).

Eventually,Sam'scuriositygotthebetterofhim.Heaskedafewgentlequestions

and,aftertwodaysofsilentstress,thewholestorypouredout.

Samlistenedpatiently,kindly.Henodded,saidlittle,andreturnedtohisowncamp.
