whentheannualgamesforthedisabledwerestartedatStoke

Mandeville,Englandin1984bySirLudwigGuttmann,thesituationbegan

tochange.

SirLudwigGuttmann,whohadbeendriventoEnglandin1939fromNazi

Gernamy,hadbeenaskedbytheBritishgovernmenttosetupaninjuries

centreatStokeMandevilleHospitalnearLondon.Hisideasabouttreating

injuriesincludedsportforthedisabled.

Inthefirstgamesjusttowteamsofinjuredsoldierstookpart.Thenext

year,1949,fiveteamstookpart.Fromthosebeginnings,thingshave

developedfast.TeamsnowcomefromabroadtoStokeMandevilleevery

year.In1960thefirstOlympicsfortheDisabledwereheldinRome,in

thesameplaceasthenormalOlympicGames,althoughtheyareorganized

separately.InotheryearsGamesfortheDisabledarestillheldatStoke

Mandeville.Inthe1984wheelchairOlympicGames,1064wheelchair
