I.Introduction

Inearly2022,afterhundredsofconversationswith

educationinnovators,wecollaboratedonapaper

called

BuildingtheFutureofLearning

1,outliningtheneedtorevampourapproachtolearningtobetter

prepareyoungpeopleforanuncertainandvolatilefuture.Wedescribedourviewofthefuturethatwe

need,andhighlightedinspiringeffortsmovingus

fromanefficiencysystemtowardsafuture-ready

“thirdhorizon”—whereyoungpeoplemakechoicestodrivetheirlearningpathway,pursueactiveand

relevantlearningacrossdisciplines,thriveinpositiverelationships,growasproblemsolversandcreators,andpursuecontentandskillsmasteryinsideand

outsideof“schools”insteadofclockingseattimeinrigidclassroomcourses.

Then,inthefinalweeksof2022,withlittlefanfare,OpenAIreleasedanewproductcalledChatGPT.

Withinaweek,morethanamillionusershadsignedup.Twomonthslater,itwas100million.And,ina

sense,humanityhasbeenstrugglingtocatchupeversince.

WelaunchedLearnerStudioin2022tohelpremake

ourlearningsystemstoinspireandprepareyoung

peopletothrive.Weconnectleadersacrosssilos,

sectorsandideologies;makesenseofchallengesandopportunities;questionoldassumptions;seekusefulintelligenceacrossresearch,practice,technology,

andpolicy;andcollaborativelychartacourseto

movethetraditional,rigidAmericaneducation

systemintotheflexible,learner-centeredecosystemweneed.Andwesupportentrepreneurswhoare

buildingnewsolutions,models,andinfrastructure

thatenablethisnewlearningecosystem.Thischangeisneedednowmorethanever.

Now,as2025comestoaclose,weseesignificant

activityinharnessingAItoacceleratemasteryof

foundationalknowledgeandskillslikereadingandmath.Weshareinthehopethatthisimportantworkcanaccelerateclosingsomeofthepersistentgapsthathaveimpactedlearnersandtheirfamiliesfor

decades.Atthesametime,wearetakingabiggerstepback.WeareaskingnotjusthowAIcanbe

leveragedasatooltoachievetraditionalacademicoutcomes,butalsowhatyoungpeoplemostneedtolearnandbeabletodoinordertobehealthy,

connected,purposeful,economicallysecure,andpositionedascreatorsinanAI-transformedworld.Withthispaper,weofferourunderstandingofthismomentanditsimplications,andinviteotherstoco-constructanswerstosomeessentialquestionstheypose:

education,philanthropy,government,andthe

weredefinenotjustHOW

learninghappens,butWHATyoungpeopleneedtolearnsotheycanthriveina

rapidlychangingworld.

Tosaywearelivingin“interestingtimes”isan

understatement.Wearelivinginprofoundly

disorientingtimesfueledbyhead-spinning

technologicaladvances,amidstaneraofintense

isolationandpolarization.Theseforcesarecollidingwithapubliceducationsystemthatisalreadyin

crisis.Unprecedentednumbersofstudentsare

missingfromtraditionalpublicschools,withtheBrookingsInstitutionprojectingtraditionalpublicschoolstoloseanother8.5millionstudentsby

20502.

Ratesofchronicabsenteeism

are50%higherthanpre-pandemiclevels.Whilemyriadfactorsare

contributing,ourstudentsarevotingwiththeirfeet—sayingschoolisboring,strugglingwithmental

health,and

feeling“disengaged”fromtheirlearning

Atthesametime,ourapproachtooverseeingschoolingisshifting—withresponsibility

increasinglydelegatedtostates.Federaland

statefundingisalsoincreasinglyshiftingtowards

individualsthroughESAandvoucherprograms.Morethan

30statesnowfundatleastoneprivateschool

choiceprogram

,and2025usheredinthenation’s

firstfederalvoucherbilldirectingpublicfundstoprivateschooltuition.

Thesetrendsareparticularlyimportanttothoseofussupportinglearners,becausethepubliceducation

sectorisuniqueinitscapacitytobuildtheskillsandmusclesweneedtoovercomeournation’spolarizedpolitics,tomendfrayedsocialties,andtoharness

thepoweroftechnology-drivensolutionstounlockeconomicopportunityforallfamilies.Nowisthe

precisemomentinwhichweneedarenewed

collectiveinvestmentinrebuildingoureducationsystemforamorepositivefuture.

Inthismoment,educationisthesectorthatcan

reverseourslidetowardsalgorithmicfatalism—theacceptancethatanAI-drivenfuturesocietyofradicalindividualismisinevitable.Itisnotinevitable.Butifwedonothing,itisthepathweareon.Fortunately,wesenseagrowinghungerforanalternativepath.

Thecentralquestionweinviteotherstoexplore

withusis:“Whatdoyoungpeopleneedtobe

inspiredandpreparedtoflourishintheAgeofAI—asindividuals,infast-changingcareers,andfordemocracyandcivicthriving?”

Withboldideasandinnovativethinking,appropriateandlong-termresourcing,alignedpolicy,and

morallyattunedleadership,itispossibletochartapositivecoursetoredefineourlearningsystemstomeetbothindividuallearners’needsandthe

commongood.Thiscourseneedstobegroundedincross-partisanhumanvalues,provideafeasiblemiddlewaythatappealstothemajorityof

Americans,andcreateahopeful,inspiringpathforyoungpeopleandsocietyintheAgeofAI.

Recognizingtheconvergingchallengesinthis

momentisimportant.Equallyimportantis

recognizingtheuniquepowerofeducation.A

centuryago,universaleducationunlockedeconomicopportunityformanyAmericansinaneraofrapid

industrialization.EducationhaspreparedmillionsofAmericanstohaveavoiceinourdemocracy,andhaspreparedgenerationsofinnovatorswiththetoolstocuredisease,puthumansonthemoon,andinvent

breakthroughtechnologies.Noothersectorhasthesameroleandabilitytoshapehowwerespondtothesechallengesandopportunities.

ThearrivalofAIandwhatitmeansinthismoment

Artificialintelligenceisanepoch-definingtechnologythatdemandswereorientfundamentalarchitectureandagreementsofoursociety.Ideally,wewill

maximizeitsbenefitswhileminimizingitsrisks.

TherearemanypotentialbenefitsofAl:acceleratingthepaceofscientificdiscovery,makingdramatic

innovationpossibleinsectorslikehealthcareand

energy,radicallydemocratizingaccesstoknowledge,andenablingmasspersonalizationatscale.

Inmedicine,AIsystemsarealreadysolvingbiologicalgrandchallenges,modelingthestructureofnearly

everyknownproteintodesignhyper-targeted

drugsfromscratch.Applicationsinengineering

mayleadustodiscoverentirelynovelmaterialsin

simulation,designingnewcompoundsforeverythingfromhyper-efficientbatteriestocarbon-capture

technologies.

Atthesametime,AIisacivilization-alteringforce

thatisnotcurrentlygroundedinpro-humanvalues.WhatmakesthismomentepochalisAI’sabilityto

callintoquestiontheveryfoundationsofhumannessandtruth.NowthatAItoolscancreatevideoand

othermediathatisindistinguishablefromthe“realthing,”ourabilitytodiscerntruthisincreasingly

challenged.Whenfoundationalmodelsareused

“off-the-shelf”inbothlearningenvironmentsand

everydaysettings,theycanleadtocognitiveatrophyanddevelopmentalbypass.

AfundamentalriskofAIisitsseductiveconvenience,offeringfriction-freeinteractionsthatwemay

begintopreferoverthemessy,complexworkofrealrelationships.Thiserosionbeginssubtly,asastudentturnstoaperfectlypatientAItutorratherthanapeerorateacherwhoisthreefeetaway,orasweincreasinglyconfideinadigitalcompanionprogrammedtobeagreeableratherthanafriend

ingemotionalmusclememorywithAI.Wevent,askforadvice,process

bigemotions—anditalmostalwaysrespondswithvalidation,evenwhenwepromptfornuanceorchallenge.Sowhatarewepracticing,iftheonly‘person’wetalktoneverdisagrees?

That’swhyit’ssoimportantforadults

—whetherthat’sparents,educators,ormentors—tocreatespaceforsafe,constructivedisagreement.Becauseifwe’renotbuildingthatmusclewithhumans,weriskraisingagenerationthatavoidsconflictentirely.”

whomightchallengeus.Byconsistentlyoptingfortheseoptimized,syntheticengagements,weriskatrophyingtheexactsocialmusclesthatgenuinehumanconnectiondemands.

AndAIisdisruptingtheentry-levelcareerladderrungs,confrontingadolescentsandteenswith

dramaticuncertaintyaboutfuturepathways,anddisplacingjobsfasterthannewonesarebeing

created.

Despitepervasivecorporatemessagesthat

efficiencyisavalues-neutraldesignprinciple,in

reality,AIalgorithmsdonotautomaticallyfactor

inconsequencesforhumanity.AIwillundoubtedly

bringpositivechangesforhumanity,butwithout

mitigatingitsrisks,itmayalsoleadtoafundamentalunderminingofourhumanity,community,equality,andsocietyatlarge.

Finally,weunderstandthatAIhasnotarrivedinan

eraofsocialequilibrium—farfromit.Theriseof

isolation,polarization,anddistrustdirectlythreatensourcollectiveabilitytonavigatethechallengesof

ourmoderntimes.AsdescribedbyDerekJohnsonin“

TheAnti-SocialCentury

,”thistrendofdisconnectionhasbeengrowingfordecades4,exacerbatedbytheeffectsoftwodecadesofsocialmediaalgorithms.

Ourmuscleforperspective-takingisatrophying,asisourabilitytoengageinthecollaborativeproblem-solvingneededtofindwin-winsolutions.Andwe

areundergoingamajorgenerationalrealignment,

amomentwhenfamiliarsystemsnolongerfitthe

worldtakingshape.Theindustrial,institutional,andbroadcasterathatdefinedthelastcenturyisgivingway.Trustinoldstructureshaseroded,andthenewgenerationsaredemandingmeaning,agency,and

belonginginentirelynewways.Whatwechoosetobuildinthistransitionwilldefinethemoralandcivicarchitectureofthenextcentury.Butwecan’tdothisbyclingingtolegacyframeworksinwaysthatfeeltorisinggenerationslikemereeffortstopreservethe

past,ratherthanpositivelyimaginethefuture.

Inthismoment,weseetwocompetingworldviewsthatwe’recallingNostalgicHumanismand

Technocentrism.Neitherissufficientforarobustdemocracy,sharedprosperity,orfairaccesstomeaningfulworkandpurpose.

1Technocentrism:EfficiencyAboveAllElseassertsthatexponentialtechnologyisbothinevitableand

inherentlypositive,dismissingestablishedhuman

institutionsandvalueslikedemocracy,morality,andethicsasobsolete.Thisworldviewpromotesradicalindividualism,disruptionwithoutaccountability,andthebeliefthatthemost“intelligent”technologists

shoulddictatehumanity’sfuture,evenatthe

expenseofsharedsocietalvalues.Absentintentionalalternativesandintervention,Technocentrismisontracktobetheforcewiththemostpowertoshape

howoursocietyfunctionsintheAgeofAI.

2NostalgicHumanism:ADeliberateSlowing

Downadvocatesforresistingtheaccelerationof

technology.Thisworldviewpromotesareturnto

asimpler,lower-techera,characterizedbydeeper

connectionstonatureandotherhumans.Inatimeofrapidchange,theappealofamoregrounded,tech-freelifeiscaptivatingformany.However,itfailsto

integrateanyofAI’spotentialforprogress.NostalgicHumanism’sfocusonavoidingtechnologyservesourinclinationtoprotectimportanthumanandnaturalexperiences,butitdiscountsourabilitytoinfluenceandshapetheAgeofAIforgood.

Asthistableproposes,weseeaneedtodefine

a“middlepath”—onethatspeakstoaquietly

frustratedAmericanmajority.AsDavidBrooks

described

,“thereiscurrentlyagreatspiritual

yearninginthepopulace,whichthereligious

institutionshavenotyetrisentomeet…It’sa

responsetoaseriesofgodsthatfailed:The

beliefthatscienceandtechcouldsolveourquestformeaning.Thebeliefthatwecanlivelike

hyperindividualistsandstillexperienceasenseofcommunalbelonging…Historyisoftendrivenbythosepeoplewhoarequietlyrepulsedforawhileandthenfindtheirvoice.”

Inthisperiodofupheaval,whenpresentedwith

twopolarizedworldviewsofNostalgicHumanism

andTechnocentrism,weadvocateforinvestingin

anddefiningathirdworldviewtopaveapositive

pathforhumanity:HumanFlourishingintheAgeofAI.Thisworldviewisamiddlewaythatchampions

ourhumanitywhileleveragingtechnologyto

fundamentallyimproveindividualsandtheworld.Itispositivebutnotpollyanna,andprioritizeshumanthriving—individual,economicandcivic.Drivenbypurpose,thismoralnorthstarisshapedbyethics

andmoralcharacter,andgroundedinright-sizedAItechnologyforpro-humandesign.Signalssuggest

thisisaworldviewthatrepresentsasilentmajorityofAmericans,mostofwhomwanttomakeadifferenceandidentifynotwithunfetteredindividualism,but

conceptslike“

morally-directedagency

.”6

We’reproposingHumanFlourishingasaworldview

thatcenters“doingwellinlife”—somethingparentsandcaregiversacrossthepoliticalspectrumwantfortheirchildren.Asoneexample,manycommunities

havedevelopedPortraitsofaGraduateinrecent

years,with“durableskills”likecollaboration,lead-

ership,andcreativityshowingupmoreconsistently

thantraditionalmarkerslike

academiccoursecom-

pletion

.7Farbroaderthantheeducationsector’spri-orgoalof“collegereadiness,”aHumanFlourishingworldviewincludescomponentsthat,takentogether,inspireandprepareonetoleadagoodlife.

WhiletheconceptofHumanFlourishinghasgainedtractionoverthepastdecade,itsapplicationin

theAgeofAIisanewchallenge.Thisworldview

embracesinsightsfromthesciencesofhappiness

andhumandevelopment—emphasizingourneed

forhumanconnection,agency(ortheabilitytomakechoices),community,purpose(ormeaning),and

motivation,alongsideanapproachthatrecognizesthedignityofwork,fuelingsharedprosperity,

economicthriving,andhumaningenuity.Itcallsforvalues-basedstrategiestooptimizetheemergenceofAIinwaysthatenhanceratherthaninhibit

HumanFlourishing.

Emergingresearchconfirmsthisdirection.In2025,theHarvardT.H.ChanSchoolofPublicHealth

conductedaglobalresearchstudyofover200,000

peopleacross22countriesdesignedtoshedlighton“flourishing”definedas“astateinwhichallaspectsofaperson’slifearegood.”Thestudy’sdefinition

consistsofsixinterdependentcomponents:

happiness/lifesatisfaction,mentalhealth,physical

health,purpose,character/virtue,closerelationships,andfinancial/materialwellbeing.Leadresearchers

foundthatflourishingoccurswhenthereisa

balanceofeconomicwellbeingalongwithasenseof

connection,meaningandpurpose

WithHumanFlourishingasournorthstar,weneedtoreorientourapproachtolearning.Aswemovefromfocusingonlyontraditionalacademicsubjectsandcollegereadiness,educationwillneedtoberedesignedtoaddresstheevolvingnatureofhumanrelationships,work,andsociety.Inthismoment,weseeanew

innovationcurvealongwhichweneedtoandnowcanbuild.ThearrivalofAIischangingbothhowwegoaboutlearningandwhatismostimportanttolearn.Thischangeshowwethinkabouttwofundamental“axes”oflearning:

“x-axis”oflearning.

2Future-readycompetencies:Atthesametime,fortoday’slearnerstounlockeconomicopportunity,sustainhumanconnection,andbetomorrow’s

problem-solvers,wecannolongeraffordtoignore

durableskillslikecollaboration,creativity,and

humanconnection.ThearrivaloftheAgeofAI

bothrequiresthatwebendourinnovationcurve

upward,andmakesitpossible.Thispowerfulnew

technologydoesnotjustproduceAItutorswhocanhelpalearneraddunlikefractions.Italsoenables

learnersandeducatorstobuildinterest-driven,real-world,project-basedlearningexperiencesatscale.Itallowsustoassessandcreditthedevelopmentoffuture-readycompetenciesinauthenticsettingsinwaysthatwereneverbeforepossible.Wearejust

beginningtoseethedramaticpotentialaheadofus.

Below,wedescribethethreepillarsthatcanformthefoundationofthisnew,future-readysystem.

Wecannowembracewhatweknowashumansandwhatresearchconfirms:educatingyoungpeople

ismorethancontentdelivery.Itincludespositiverelationships,safeenvironments,richexperiences,criticalskills,andintegratedsupport.Whatitwill

taketoflourishintheAgeofAIcannotbedeliveredusingthemethodsandoutcomesofapastthatdidnotprioritizethesethings.

Inthistransition,ourgoalissupportingyoung

people’scompetencies,skills,knowledge,and

dispositionstopreparethemforflourishingintheAgeofAI—inlife,careers,anddemocracy,forbothindividualandcommongood.TraditionalAmericaneducation,centeredonsiloedcourses,seattime,

andcompliance,isnolongerfitforthisnewpurpose.Weneedtoredefinewhatwevalue,teach,and

measure,movingfromcomplianceandefficiencytoHumanFlourishingandadaptivewisdom.

Itwon’tbeenoughtostandupafewnewbright

spots,andhopethosetranslatetolarger-scale

change.Itwon’tbeenoughtobuildagreatnew

product,andhopethatwidespreadadoption

unlocksthechangethatisneeded.Rather,this

paradigm-shiftingmomentrequiresintegrated,

cross-disciplinary,andcross-partisansolutionsthatrecognizethechanginglandscapeofworkandciviclife.Investmentsin“enablingconditions”likeR&D,

policy,andchangemanagementwillneedtosupportthegrowthofnew,innovativemodelsandtools—

withpromisingeffortsemerging.Wewillneedto

iterate,butacturgentlygivenAI’srapiddevelopmentandadoption.

WithHumanFlourishingsetasournewendgoal,wemustdesignanewsystemtogetthere.Theoldsystem

ofeducation,standardizedandtransactional,isnotequippedtosufficientlyrespondtotheAgeofAI.The

goalisachievingbothAI-enabledknowledgemasteryandessentialhumanskills—likehumanconnection,

metacognition,wisdom,andadaptability—solearnerscanthriveinanAI-reshapedworld.Belowwedescribethreecriticalcomponentsofthisnewsystem.

I.Modernizethe“what”:CreateanewK12“Humanics”curriculum

Ournewnorthstarmeanswecannotsolelyfocusonpreparingstudentsasworkersinanoldeconomyfor

whichjobrequirementsarerapidlychanging.TheAgeofAIrequiresincreasingouremphasison“human”

competencies—thosedifficulttoautomate—whichareessentialforflourishingindividually,incareers,andinanAI-shapeddemocracy.The“humanics”concept,introducedbyJosephAoun9inahighereducation

context(data,technology,andhumanliteracy,coupledwithcross-disciplinarypedagogy),providesahelpfulframeworkwecanadaptourforPK-14contexttoidentifythestrategicshiftsthatwillberequired:

ClarifyourfocusonAIliteracy,datascience,andemergenttechnology.

ThereisgrowingclaritythatalllearnerswillrequiregreaterAIliteracy,

alongwithhigherfluencyindatascienceandemergenttechnology;theymustnotjustnavigatelearningandworkinacontextincreasinglyshaped

byAI,butbepreparedasshapersandbuildersofthechapterahead.

Reducetraditionallyrequiredcontent.Asfactualknowledgebecomescommoditized,wemustrevisitwhat“required”knowledgeismost

necessarytopreparelearnerswiththefoundationtheyneedtobe

discerningcriticalthinkers.First,wemustestablishwithgreatclarity

thatearlyliteracyandnumeracyarenecessarytothehigher-order

discernmentandcriticalthinkingthisagerequires.Fromthere,

though,wemustrevisitthemassivebindersofcontentstandardsand

thoughtfullyreducewhatknowledgeis“required,”basingdecisions
