Located on the Persian Gulf, it had a population of 998,651 in 2008,1

2、 and is also one of the municipalities of Qatar. Doha is Qatars largest city, with over 60% of the nations population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and is also the economic centre of the country. Doha also serves as the seat of government of Qatar, which is ruled by Sheikh Hamad bin K

3、halifa Al Thani. Doha is home to the Education City, an area devoted to research and education. Doha was the site of the first ministerial-level meeting of the Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations. The city of Doha held the 2006 Asian Games, which was the largest Asian Gam

4、es ever held. Doha also hosted the 2011 Pan Arab Games and most of the games at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. Doha will also host a large number of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Doha is currently bidding to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.2 The World Petroleum Council held the 20th World Petroleum

The name Doha came from the Arabic ad-dawha, the big tree.“ The city was made capital of the British protectorate of Qatar in 1916, and became the nations capital following the

6、 independence of Qatar in 1971. during the early 20th century, much of Qatars economy depended on fishing and pearling, and Doha had about 350 pearling boats. However, after the introduction of the Japanese cultured pearls in the 1930s, the whole region, including the town of Doha, suffered a major

7、depression and Qatar was plunged into poverty. This lasted until in the late 1930s, when oil was discovered . However, the exploration and exportation was halted due to the second world war. Today the nation as a whole produces over 800,000 barrels of oil daily. In 1969, the Government House opened.

Economy,Much of Qatars oil and natural gas wealth is visible in Doha, which is the economic centre of Qatar. Doha is home to the headquarters of the countrys largest oil

16、 and gas companies, including Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and RasGas. Dohas economy is built on the revenue the country has made from its oil and natural gas industries, and the Qatari government is rapidly trying to diversify the Qatari economy in order to move away from this dependence on oil. As a

17、result, Doha is currently experiencing a very large boom, with the city developing very rapidly this is mostly the result of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifas modernization program. Like the nearby city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Dohas economy is moving away from its dependency on the oil and nat

18、ural gas industries, although unlike Dubai, Dohas main focus is not tourism. Doha is seeing huge amounts of growth, with the population of the city increasing by more than 30,000 between 2004 and 2006; this has caused a boom in the real estate sector, with real estate prices skyrocketing.19 Accordin

19、g to the BBC, as of late January 2007, Doha is now a more expensive city than Dubai in terms of real estate prices. This rate of growth has led to projects such as the Lusail City project, which is being constructed north of Doha and will eventually house 200,000 people. Construction is also booming

20、 in Doha, a result of increasing corporate and commercial activity in Doha. This is most visible with the changing skyline of the city, as Doha has over 50 towers currently being constructed, the largest of which is the Dubai Towers. At the same time, 39 new hotels are joining Qatars booming tourism

21、 market, adding about 9,000 new rooms by 2009. Qatar Airways is headquartered in the Qatar Airways Tower in Doha.20,6.airport,Doha International Airport (IATA: DOH,ICAO: OTBD) (Arabic: ) is the only commercial airport in Qatar. It has three mosques, free Wi-Fi, a duty-free area, eateries and 42 park

22、ing bays for aircraft. There are also 60 check-in gates, 8 baggage claim belts and over 1,000 car parking spaces. The airport suffers from overutilization even though the airport has been expanded numerous times. The current capacity stands at 12million passengers per year.4 Its 15,000ft (4,600m) ru

23、nway is one of the longest at a civil airport. It is the main base of Qatar Airways. In the past, the airport was mostly used by Qatari holiday makers and foreign workers coming for the oil and gas sector. Now the airport is attracting more people such as holiday makers and transit travellers. It is also growing as Qatar Airways is expanding more rapidly.
