1、UNIT #5 TOOLS & EQUIPMENT,TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NON-EVAPORATIVE UNSAFE ACTS MACHINERY ELEVEN STEPS FOR MACHINE SAFETY TOTAL OBSERVATION REVIEW,.FOR SAFETY,TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT,Most labors require the use of a variety of tools and equipment. For each job, there is the appropriate tool or piece of equipm
2、ent to use. That is why it is important to make sure we are using the tools and equipment designed to assist in getting the job done.,NON-EVAPORATIVE UNSAFE ACTS,When talking about tools and equipment, we are referring to screwdrivers, hammers, etc. as well as forklifts, cranes and machinery. Most o
3、f the unsafe acts related with the way employees use tools and equipment are non-evaporative. That is, we have more than 30 seconds to observe them.,MACHINERY,28% of injuries are due to accidents while working with tools and equipment. Due to the severe nature with many of the injuries relative to o
4、ther types of accidents, the costs (medical, workers comp., loss of production, etc.) of injuries associated with tools & equipment operation are usually higher.,EMPLOYEE-CREATEDUNSAFE CONDITIONS,Unsafe conditions are situations that may cause an accident. All unsafe conditions we may find in our ar
5、ea of responsibility has had its origin with unsafe acts employees have committed.,TOTAL OBSERVATION,Look above, below, behind and inside. Listen for vibrations and unusual sounds. Smell for unusual odors. Feel for unusual temperatures and vibrations.,To be expert observers, we must be alert to all
6、things that happen around us.,REMEMBER TO LOOK. ABOVE BELOW BEHIND INSIDE,QUESTIONING ATTITUDE,Ask questions that help us investigate the motives for an unsafe act. - WHAT IF.? - HOW.?,WHAT TO OBSERVE WHERE MACHINES & EQUIPMENT ARE USED,Machine hazards are recognized. Adequate guards and safety devi
7、ces are installed and maintained. Supplementary methods are used to improve conditions in and around the machine. Such guards and methods are used by the workers.,ELEVEN STEPS ON MACHINE SAFETY,1. Use the right machine for the job. 2. Eliminate the need of the operator to reach into the machine. 3.
8、Make the machine controls convenient, identifiable, and protected from accidental activation. 4. Provide guards or safety devices. 5. Ensure good maintenance of machines, guards, and safety devices.,ELEVEN STEPS ON MACHINE SAFETY,6. Provide for lockout of power. 7. Keep area around machine clean and
9、 clear of debris. 8. Establish good “match” between operator and machine. 9. See that proper dress and PPE are used. 10. Train employees in safe work practices. 11. 10、on or unsafe act in an area that is not under our responsibility, first we have to talk with the person in charge so he/she can speak with the employees, thereby teamwork and morale may be maintained. If the supervisor of the area cannot be found, then the supervisor/manager who observed the unsafe
11、condition/act should take immediate corrective action to prevent recurrence. Remember.Safety is a line-management responsibility.,UNIT #5 REVIEW,Before we observe Tools and Equipment, we must fix our attention on reactions, personal protective equipment and positions of people. 28% of injuries with
12、lost work days are due to the use of tools and equipment. We must make sure that the tools and equipment that are being used are appropriate for the job. The machine guards should be of proper design.,REVIEW (CONT),When we observe employees using tools, machinery and equipment, we must be aware for the following unsafe acts: - Tools/equipment are wrong for the job. - Using tools/equipment incorrectly. - Operating in unsafe conditions.
