Analysis of the main characters in Great Gatsby Gatsby, the main character in this novel, leaves a very deep impression on me. The story really promotes me some real soul-searching. Gatsby devotes himself to chasing his true love deeply despite all the obstacles, but only to end up with the cruel reality. During his early period of age, we can judge him as an ambitious guy from his saying -“No more smoking or chewing Bath every other day Read one improving book or magazine per week Save $5.00 crossed out $3.00 per week Be better to parents”. He seemed to be very innocent but actually he wanted a lot from Daisy. When he came back from the army and found Daisy went behind his back. However, he still immersed himself in fancy that Daisy actually didnt really love her husband. In consequence, he tried all means to go back together with Daisy. In order to catch her attention, Gatsby bought mansion and held luxurious festivals. From the detail - “Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New Yorkevery Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves.”, we can refer that he did do everything in his power to attract Daisy and go back together with her. Although Gatsby loved Daisy at all costs, giving up all his dignity, his status and his money, what Daisy loved was only money and fame. At the end, she even didnt appear in the funeral of Gatsby. If we regard Gatsby as emotional, on the contrary, Nick is very rational. We can judge that he is a very good listener from his saying -“In consequence, Im inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores”. As a result, Gatsby would like to talk with him about his suffering and seek comforts from him. Although he was attracted by the beauty of Jordan and once admired the luxuriant life of the upper class, he always kept clam and wide awake. Gradually, he witnessed the corruptive life of American upper class. He realized that in essence, Jordan actually had no difference with Daisy in their spirit, that is - only enjoy the excitements from money. At the end of the story, Nick shouted in Gatsby s funeral :” theyre a rotten crowd, youre worth the whole damn bunch put together.” Finally, Nick left and went back to his original life in rural area.
