1 as 2313.1.112006 standards australia australian standard methods of test for single sided and double sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape method 1.11: adhesionresistance to dynamic shear load at ambient temperature preface this standard was prepared by the standards australia committee pk-025, packaging code at the request of australian industry. the objective of this standard is to specify a test method for determining the dynamic shear load on single and double sided pressure-sensitive adhesive tape at ambient temperatures. method 1 scope this standard specifies the method for determining the ability of pressure-sensitive adhesive tape to resist shear loading at ambient temperatures. 2 referenced documents the following documents are referred to in this standard: as 1683 methods of test for elastomers 1683.15.2 method 15.2:durometer hardness 2193 calibration and classification of force-measuring systems 3 reagents 3.1 isopropynol reagent grade, is required. note: acetone, reagent grade, may also be used. as 2313.1.112006 accessed by university of south australia on 09 may 2008 as 2313.1.112006 2 standards australia .au 3.2 apparatus and materials the following apparatus and materials are required: (a) tensile testing machine the tensile testing machine shall have a rate of travel 300 10 mm/min of the moving jaw or carriage. the initial clear spacing between the machine jaws shall be 125 mm. the calibration of the tensile testing machine shall comply with grade b of as 2193. (b) steel roller (see figure 1) of diameter 80 5 mm and width 45 1 mm, covered with rubber approximately 6 mm thick, and having a durometer hardness of 80 5 type a degrees (in accordance with as 1683.15.2). note: the mass of the roller proper (which applies pressure to the specimen) should be 2.0 0.1 kg. it should be so constructed that the mass of the handle is not added to the mass of the roller during use. (c) two stainless steel panels approximately 50 mm wide, at least 125 mm long, and approximately 1.5 mm thick and finished in the lengthwise direction to a bright annealed finish which has a surface finish of 0.04 m. (d) specimen cutter consisting of a 25 mm thick 200 mm long 25 mm wide aluminium bar stock. the edges for about 125 mm from one end shall be rounded slightly to form a handle. the width of the bar for 75 mm from the opposite end shall be narrowed to exactly 12 mm minus the thickness of a single razor blade (one of two razor blades used as cutting edges). the razor blades shall be held in position using side plates. the end of the cutter shall be cut away at 45 angle to expose the cutting edge at one end of the blades. the edges shall be separated by a distance of 12 0.25 mm. (e) fresh absorbent cleaning material these cleaning materials shall be lint free and contain no soluble additives (e.g. surgical glaze, untreated paper tissue). (f) bond paper 4 test conditions testing shall be conducted at 23 5c and 50 5% relative humidity. 5 preparation of test specimens the roll, from which the test specimens are to be taken, shall be conditioned at 23 5c and 50 5% relative humidity for 24 1 h prior to testing. the test specimen shall be a minimum of 250 mm long for non-elastic backings, and at least 150 mm long for other types of backings. accessed by university of south australia on 09 may 2008 3 as 2313.1.112006 .au standards australia figure 1 roller 6 procedure the procedure shall be as follows: (a) clean a test panel by dispensing the isopropynol (3.1) on the stainless steel panels (3.2(c) and wipe until dry with the fresh absorbent cleansing material (3.2(e). repeat this procedure for a total of three washes. discard cleaned panels showing stains, discoloration or scratches. avoid contact of the panel surface with fingers. note: either surgical gauze or untreated paper tissue can be used as the cleaning material, as these are lint free and contain no additives which are soluble in the solvent. (b) take a test specimen from a freely rotating conditioned roll, the minimum width of which shall be 6 mm, by manually unrolling the roll radially and after discarding the outer three laps of the roll. note: the speed of removal of the test specimen from the roll is operator-dependent. usually, a speed of approximately 300 mm/s is attained. (c) where the width of a roll is 25 mm wide or less, use the test specimen direct. (d) where a roll is greater than 25 mm wide or wider than the width of the jaws of the tension testing machine, cut the roll using the specimen cutter, to a width of 25 mm. (e) measure and record the width of the specimen to the nearest 0.5 mm. (f) condition the test sample which has been attached to the two stainless steel panels from 30 minutes as specified in clause 4 before placing in the tensile testing machine. notes: 1 the test sample should be fitted and tested very quickly to avoid temperature lose. 2 protective gloves should be worn to avoid elevated temperatures. (g) clamp the specimen squarely in the jaws of the tension testing machine (see figure 2). separate the jaws at a uniform speed of 300 10 mm/min until the specimen breaks. record the value in newtons. note: reject those readings obtained where the specimen breaks at, or in, the jaws. (h) repeat steps (a) to (g) using another two test specimens taken from the same roll. accessed by university of south australia on 09 may 2008 as 2313.1.112006 4 standards australia .au stainless steel bar stainless steel bar figure 2 test method 7 calculation the average breaking strength for the specimens shall be calculated from the following equation: w l r m m 25 3 = where m r = average breaking strength, in newtons per 25 millimetre m l = sum of jaw separation at break, in millimetres w = measured width of specimen, in millimetres where the results fall below the value specified in the referring standard, test two further rolls to determine whether the specimens meet the requirements. note: the retest requirements of the method have been introduced to allow for the possibility of an individual roll having been damaged, which could lead to abnormality low figures for the breaking strength. 8 report the following information shall be reported: (a) the average breaking strength of the three specimens taken from the same roll, in newtons per 25 millimetre (n/25 mm) width to the nearest 0.1 n/25 mm.
