Life was crisis-laden; people became helpless and insignificant in face of an overwhelming universe. Life Story born in Dorset in 1840 he received education at local schools until he was 15 years old was articled to a local architect, at 16 Six years later he went to London to work for a famous architect. One evening he drank a lot, and he sold his wife and daughter to a soldier, Newson. Next day, Henchard felt deeply regretful for what he had done. He looked for them everywhere but failed. After that, he made a promise to God that he would never drink in the following twenty years. About eighteen years later, Henchards wife, Susan, came back with her daughter after the soldier missing. And when Susan went to Casterbridge knew that Henchard had already become a successful man. Henchard thought Elizabeth-Jan was their own daughter, so decided to marry with Susan again. A Scottish named Farfrae came into Casterbridge, and he became not only a competent assistant but a good friend of Henchard. Elizabeth-Jane loved him very much for his handsome face and his talent in singing Scottish songs. But he loves Lucetta, who had intended to marry with Henchard. Hnchard and Susan got married, however, their new life didnt last long for Susan died. She left a letter to Henchard, from the letter, Henchard knew that Elizabeth was not her daughter at all. Elizabeth was the child of Susan and the soldier. Then Henchards attitude toward Elizabeth changed a lot. At the same time, good relationship between Henchard and Farfare was broken and they looked each other as an enemy. When Henchard knew Lucetta and Farfare felt in love with each other, he was so angry. Even though Lucetta had married with Farfaer, she didnt live very happy. Because those letters between she and Henchard had been opened before public. Because of his bad tempter he lost all his possessions. Then Henchard became a poor man. Elizabeth-Jan was a very kind girl, she loved her step-father and persuaded him to move to live with her. But he did not . Elizabeth and Farfrae got married. Henchard left Casterbridge. When Elizabeth and Farfrae found him he has died, and before he death, he did not want anyone to miss him. Analysis of Analysis of the main character Henchard: At the beginning of the novel: Henchard is portrayed as one given over to fits of despondent self-pity, violent outbursts, and irrevocable spur-of-the-moment decisions. In the prime of life, Henchard is very strong and coarse. The causes of Henchards tragedy His tragedy is not caused by his divided characters, but also caused by the development of society. Henchards tragedy is not only his own tragedy, but also the tragedy of the time and society he lives in.
