The sports meet is to take place on May 28.2). platform : n. Even if they did know who you were: “Do” can be put in front of a verb to show emphasis. 在动词前加do表示强调。 She does talk a lot, doesnt she? 2). vacant /tnkIev5/: a. not filled or occupied; empty 空着的;未被占用的;空的 a vacant room vacant land a vacant position a vacant seat 3). said very politely that my name was Mark Twain and could I have but he cut me short again: said后面有两个宾语从句,my name was Mark Twain 和 could I have 。从语法的角度看,第二个从句应使用间接引语if I could have。作者在这里使用直接引语could I have的目的是模仿当时说话的情形,以便和下文“但他又一次打断了我”更好地衔接起来。破折号表示尚未说出口的two tickets。4). I saw Mary at the club the other night. 5). smooth over: make smooth; put right; make (sth.) seem better or more pleasant平息;消除;缓和 e.g. Perhaps a gift of flowers will help smooth the matter over. Im sure I can smooth over our little misunderstanding. 2 Language Points 1). neat : a. (of things) arranged in an orderly way; clean and in good order; tidy安排有序的;整洁的;整齐的 e.g. Her homework is so neat. I keep my room neat by cleaning it every day. 2). On a forty-degree night, she was wearing only a faded dress, a thin, light-brown sweater too small to button, and a pair of torn black slippers: (Note: 40 degrees Fahrenheit roughly equals to 4.4 degrees Celsius. 华氏40度约等于摄氏4.4度。)动词wear后面有三个宾语:(1) a faded dress; (2) a thin, light-brown sweater too small to button; (3) a pair of torn black slippers。第二个宾语中too small to button是sweater的定语。3). fade : v. The sun faded this T-shirt. 3.Language Points 1). label : n. small piece of paper or card put on an object to state what it is, who owns it, etc. 标签;标号;标记 e.g. stick a label on the box Because there is no label on the can we dont know what it contains. 2). mutter : v. speak or say (sth.) in a low voice that is hard to hear小声而含糊不清地说;咕哝着说 e.g. She was muttering to herself. She muttered a few words to me. 3). in reply to: in answer to 作为对的回答 e.g. I am writing in reply to your letter dated Jan. 11. I called him in reply to the message he left on the phone.
