文档简介

Rebecca,About the author,Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989), born in London. She is a British author. Her father was Sir Gerald du Maurier, the leading actor and manager at Wyndhams Theatre in London. Her mother, Muriel, was an actress and her grandfather, George du Maurier, was an artist and writer. So Daphne and her tow sisters grew up in a world of writers and actors. She was a voracious reader. Her first poems and stories were written while she was still a child.,About the author,In 1932, Daphne du Maurier was married with Frederick Browning who read her first full-length work of fiction, The Loving Spirit and fell in love with her.,About the author,Her husband Browning had been engaged to a very beautiful and self-assured woman before he knew Daphne. Daphne was consumed with jealousy. It seems likely that this woman may well have been developed to create the character of Rebecca. On the contrary, the nameless second Mrs. de Winter is none other than Daphne du Maurier herself.,content,“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again“ is the books famous opening line, and after the first two chapters, its unnamed narrator (she is only known by her title, Mrs de Winter) reminisces about her past. While working as the companion to a rich American woman vacationing in Monte Carlo, the narrator becomes acquainted with a wealthy Englishman, Maximilian (Maxim) de Winter, a 40-something widower. After a fortnight of courtship, she agrees to marry him and, after the wedding and honeymoon, accompanies him to his mansion, the beautiful West Country estate Manderley.,content,Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, was profoundly devoted to the first Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca. She continually attempts to undermine the new Mrs. de Winter psychologically, subtly suggesting to her that she will never attain the urbanity and charm the first one possessed. Whenever the new Mrs. de Winter attempts to make changes at Manderley, Mrs. Danvers describes how Rebecca ran it when she was alive. Each time Mrs. Danvers does this, she implies that the new Mrs. de Winter lacks the experience and knowledge necessary for running an important estate. Cowed by Mrs. Danverss imposing manner, the new mistress simply caves.,content,She is soon convinced that Maxim regrets his impetuous decision to marry her and is still deeply in love with the seemingly perfect Rebecca. The climax occurs at Manderleys annual costume ball. Mrs. Danvers manipulates the protagonist into wearing a replica of the dress shown in a portrait of one of the former inhabitants of the estatethe same costume worn by Rebecca to much acclaim shortly before her death. The narrator has a drummer announce her entrance using the name of the lady in the portrait: Caroline de Winter. When the narrator shows Maxim the dress, he gets very angry at her and orders her to change.,content,It is revealed Rebecca had an appointment with a Doctor Baker shortly before her death, presumably to confirm her pregnancy. When the doctor is found he reveals Rebecca had been suffering from cancer and would have died within a few months; furthermore, due to the malformation of her uterus, she could never have been pregnant. Knowing she was going to die, Rebecca manipulated Maxim into killing her quickly, rather than face a lingering death. Maxim feels a great sense of foreboding and insists on driving through the night to return to Manderley. However, before he comes in sight of the house, it is clear from a glow on the horizon and wind-borne ashes that it is ablaze. It is evident at the beginning that Maxim and the second Mrs. de Winter now live in some foreign exile. The events recounted in the book are in essence a memoir of her life at Manderley.,Personal thoughts,The first is the score of the image of Rebecca. The novel never gives us a detailed description on Rebecca, but her image is deeply fixed in my mind. And the powerful effect she has on people makes her seem as “live”.We learned Rebecca roles Rebecca almost from the other roles talking on her, but to some extent, we know Rebecca better by the end of the story than we know any other roles. Without doubt, it is a success.,Personal thoughts,The Second is the bewitching plot of the novel. It never occurred to me that Rebecca was killed by maxim at the beginning. I just think she was died in the contretemps. But the unexpected event that the remains of Rebeccas boat being discovered force the maxim to be interrogated. At that first, I believe the truth that maxim killed Rebecca would Tabb, not be found, but what James Tabb, the boat built said make a climax of the novel.,Personal thoughts,Then I began to suppose that maxim will be sentenced to prison, but the novel fools again, after person: a long investigation, they found a crucial person: Doctor Baker. We learned from him that Rebecca had a serious disease; she had the motivation to kill herself because it is too painful. When I feel everything should come to an end: maxim and his wife will have a happy life, maxim said he had a presentiment presentiment that something bad will happen. It has been in ruins. So the intrigue is the most vivid feature of the novel.,The characteristic of women in Rebecca,Three main female characters of Rebecca: -Rebecca(the first Mrs.de Winter): She was a woman died from the beginning but her powerful influence seemed remained all the way through the story; She was a woman with the mo
