Nice to see you here again. There is a big zoo in our city. There are many animals in it. Do you want to see the animals in the zoo?S: Yes, we do.T: But now you have to learn something about animals in English. Do you know the names of any animals?S: Yes, we do. T: Can you name some of them in English?S: Yes, we can.As the students say, write them on the board.T: Do you love animals?S: Yes, we do.T: (Turning to a student) What kind of animals do you love?S1: I love cats. T: Are they big?S1: No, they arent.T: (Turning to another student)And what kind of animals do you love?S2: I love tigers.T: Are they big?S2: Yes, they are. Let more students say and practice more.T: There are many kinds of animals in the world. How many animal words do you know? If you cant say the names in English, you can say them in Chinese. Ask students to describe each animal in some way.They may tell its color or tell if it is big or small.Say, Today we are going to learn the names of some more animals. Well also leam how to say which ones we like and tell why we like them.Step II Match work(1a)Ask the students to read the words and the picture, and then match the names with the pictures a-h.T: In this unit, we are going to talk about the names of more animals and the opinions about the animals. Now look at the picture. This is a picture of a zoo. In the zoo, there are many animals in it. Now we have eight names of animals on the left of the picture and eight pictures marked with a, b, . and h. Read the words and look at the pictures on page 13 and write the letter of each animal in the blank by that animals name. Encourage or help the students to say something about the picture and do the match work. T: What is the name of the animal in Picture a?S1: It is a dolphin. Write “dolphin” on the blackboard. Ask the students to repeat the words and write “a” on the line next to the word “dolphin.” Go on with the others in the same way. Then check the answers with the students.Show the following. dolphin a tiger b giraffe c koalad panda e lion f penguin g elephant h Step III Listening (1b)Point to the numbered list of words in Activity 1a and play the recording. Ask the students to listen to the recording and circle the countries in 1a. T: You are going to hear three conversations. In the conversations, the people talk about the animals. Please listen carefully as you look at the words in Activity 1a and put check marker in front of the name of each animal you hear. Play the tape and then check the answers. T: Well now, answer my questions. What animals are there in the conversations? S1: There are pandas, giraffes and penguins. Ask the students to listen to and repeat after the recording and then check the answers.Further activity: Ask the students to do some pairwork in the following way if they can understand the listening material well. T: Now repeat after the recording.A sample: Girls: (repeat after the recording) Lets see the pandas first.Boys: (repeat after the recording) Why is that?Girls: Because theyre very cute.Change the roles and repeat after the recording again. Then ask them to say the conversation without the help of the recording. Step IV Pairwork (1c)1. Ask the students to make conversations in pairs.Show the following. Lets see the pandas / giraffes / lions / penguins / dolphins / koalas / elephants / tigers?Why?Because theyre cute / interesting / fun / interesting / smart.T: Now please make conversations in pairs, using the animals in Activity 1a and the description words in Activity 1c.Sample dialogues:1) S1: Lets see the pandas. S2: Why do you want to see the pandas?S1: Because they are very interesting.2) S1: Lets see the elephants. S2: Why do you want to see the elephants?S1: Because they are very smart.2. Further practice (See Teaching resources IV) Step V Homework1. Ask the students to remember the new words learnt in this period (on page 116) by heart.2.
