butonehundredyearslater,thenegrostillisnotfree.onehundredyearslater,thelifeofthenegroisstillsadlycrippledbythemanaclesofsegregationandthechainsofdiscrimination.onehundredyearslater,thenegrolivesonalonelyislandofpovertyinthemidstofavastoceanofmaterialprosperity.onehundredyearslater,thenegroisstilllanguishedinthecornersofamericansocietyandfindshimselfanexileinhisownland.andsoweveeheretodaytodramatizeashamefulcondition. inasenseweveetoournationscapitaltocashacheck.whenthearchitectsofourrepublicwrotethemagnificentwordsoftheconstitutionandthedeclarationofindependence,theyweresigningapromissorynotetowhicheveryamericanwastofallheir.thisnotewasapromisethatallmen,yes,blackmenaswellaswhitemen,wouldbeguaranteedtheunalienablerightsoflife,libertyandthepursuitofhappiness.itisobvioustodaythatamericahasdefaultedonthispromissorynote,insofarashercitizensofcolorareconcerned.insteadofhonoringthissacredobligation,americahasgiventhenegropeopleabadcheck,acheckwhichhasebackmarkedinsufficientfunds. butwerefusetobelievethatthebankofjusticeisbankrupt.werefusetobelievethatthereareinsufficientfundsinthegreatvaultsofopportunityofthisnation.andso,weveetocashthischeck,acheckthatwillgiveusupondemandtherichesoffreedomandthesecurityofjustice. wehavealsoetothishallowedspottoremindamericaofthefierceurgencyofnow.thisisnotimetoengageintheluxuryofcoolingoffortotakethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism.nowisthetimetomakerealthepromisesofdemocracy.nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevalleyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice.nowisthetimetoliftournationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherhood.nowisthetimetomakejusticearealityforallofgodschildren. itwouldbefatalforthenationtooverlooktheurgencyofthemoment.thisswelteringsummerofthenegroslegitimatediscontentwillnotpassuntilthereisaninvigoratingautumnoffreedomandequality.nineteensixty-threeisnotanend,butabeginning.andthosewhohopethatthenegroneededtoblowoffsteamandwillnowbecontentwillhavearudeawakeningifthenationreturnstobusinessasusual.andtherewillbeneitherrestnortranquilityinamericauntilthenegroisgrantedhiscitizenshiprights.thewhirlwindsofrevoltwillcontinuetoshakethefoundationsofournationuntilthebrightdayofjusticeemerges. butthereissomethingthatimustsaytomypeople,whostandonthewarmthresholdwhichleadsintothepalaceofjustice:intheprocessofgainingourrightfulplace,wemustnotbeguiltyofwrongfuldeeds.letusnotseektosatisfyourthirstforfreedombydrinkingfromthecupofbitternessandhatred.wemustforeverconductourstruggleonthehighplaneofdignityanddiscipline.wemustnotallowourcreativeprotesttodegenerateintophysicalviolence.againandagain,wemustrisetothemajesticheightsofmeetingphysicalforcewithsoulforce. themarvelousnewmilitancywhichhasengulfedthenegromunitymustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofourwhitebrothers,asevidencedbytheirpresenceheretoday,haveetorealizethattheirdestinyistiedupwithourdestiny.andtheyhaveetorealizethattheirfreedomisinextricablyboundtoourfreedom. wecannotwalkalone. andaswewalk,wemustmakethepledgethatweshallalwaysmarchahead. wecannotturnback. letusnotwallowinthevalleyofdespair,isaytoyoutoday,myfriends. andsoeventhoughwefacethedifficultiesoftodayandtomorrow,istillhaveadream.itisadreamdeeplyrootedintheamericandream. ihaveadreamthatonedaythisnationwillriseupandliveoutthetruemeaningofitscreed:weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal.
