演讲稿 西奥多罗斯福总统就职演说 myfellow-citizens：nopeopleonearthhavemorecausetobethankfulthanours,andthisissaidreverently,innospiritofboastfulnessinourownstrength,butwithgratitudetothegiverofgoodwhohasblesseduswiththeconditionswhichhaveenabledustoachievesolargeameasureofwell-beingandofhappiness.tousasapeopleithasbeengrantedtolaythefoundationsofournationallifeinanewcontinent.wearetheheirsoftheages,andyetwehavehadtopayfewofthepenaltieswhichinoldcountriesareexactedbythedeadhandofabygonecivilization.wehavenotbeenobligedtofightforourexistenceagainstanyalienrace;andyetourlifehascalledforthevigorandeffortwithoutwhichthemanlierandhardiervirtueswitheraway.undersuchconditionsitwouldbeourownfaultifwefailed;andthesuccesswhichwehavehadinthepast,thesuccesswhichweconfidentlybelievethefuturewillbring,shouldcauseinusnofeelingofvainglory,butratheradeepandabidingrealizationofallwhichlifehasofferedus;afullacknowledgmentoftheresponsibilitywhichisours;andafixeddeterminationtoshowthatunderafreegovernmentamightypeoplecanthrivebest,alikeasregardsthethingsofthebodyandthethingsofthesoul.muchhasbeengivenus,andmuchwillrightfullybeexpectedfromus.wehavedutiestoothersanddutiestoourselves;andwecanshirkneither.wehavebecomeagreatnation,forcedbythefactofitsgreatnessintorelationswiththeothernationsoftheearth,andwemustbehaveasbeseemsapeoplewithsuchresponsibilities.towardallothernations,largeandsmall,ourattitudemustbeoneofcordialandsincerefriendship.wemustshownotonlyinourwords,butinourdeeds,thatweareearnestlydesirousofsecuringtheirgoodwillbyactingtowardtheminaspiritofjustandgenerousrecognitionofalltheirrights.butjusticeandgenerosityinanation,asinanindividual,countmostwhenshownnotbytheweakbutbythestrong.whileevercarefultorefrainfromwrongdoingothers,wemustbenolessinsistentthatwearenotwrongedourselves.wewishpeace,butwewishthepeaceofjustice,thepeaceofrighteousness.wewishitbecausewethinkitisrightandnotbecauseweareafraid.noweaknationthatactsmanfullyandjustlyshouldeverhavecausetofearus,andnostrongpowershouldeverbeabletosingleusoutasasubjectforinsolentaggression.ourrelationswiththeotherpowersoftheworldareimportant;butstillmoreimportantareourrelationsamongourselves.suchgrowthinwealth,inpopulation,andinpowerasthisnationhasseenduringthecenturyandaquarterofitsnationallifeisinevitablyacpaniedbyalikegrowthintheproblemswhichareeverbeforeeverynationthatrisestogreatness.powerinvariablymeansbothresponsibilityanddanger.ourforefathersfacedcertainperilswhichwehaveoutgrown.wenowfaceotherperils,theveryexistenceofwhichitwasimpossiblethattheyshouldforesee.modernlifeisbothplexandintense,andthetremendouschangeswroughtbytheextraordinaryindustrialdevelopmentofthelasthalfcenturyarefeltineveryfiberofoursocialandpoliticalbeing.neverbeforehavementriedsovastandformidableanexperimentasthatofadministeringtheaffairsofacontinentundertheformsofademocraticrepublic.theconditionswhichhavetoldforourmarvelousmaterialwell-being,whichhavedevelopedtoaveryhighdegreeourenergy,self-reliance,andindividualinitiative,havealsobroughtthecareandanxietyinseparablefromtheaccumulationofgreatwealthinindustrialcenters.uponthesuccessofourexperimentmuchdepends,notonlyasregardsourownwelfare,butasregardsthewelfareofmankind.ifwefail,thecauseoffreeself-governmentthroughouttheworldwillrocktoitsfoundations,andthereforeourresponsibilityisheavy,toourselves,totheworldasitisto-day,andtothegenerationsyetunborn.thereisnogoodreasonwhyweshouldfearthefuture,butthereiseveryreasonwhyweshouldfaceitseriously,neitherhidingfromourselvesthegravityoftheproblemsbeforeusnorfearingtoapproachtheseproblemswiththeunbending,unflinchingpurposetosolvethemaright.yet,afterall,thoughtheproblemsarenew,thoughthetaskssetbeforeusdifferfromthetaskssetbeforeourfatherswhofoundedandpreservedthisrepublic,thespiritinwhichthesetasksmustbeundertakenandtheseproblemsfaced,ifourdutyistobewelldone,remainsessentiallyunchanged.weknowthatself-governmentisdifficult.weknowthatnopeopleneedssuchhightraitsofcharacterasthatpeoplewhichseekstogovernitsaffairsarightthroughthefreelyexpressedwillofthefreemenwhoposeit.butwehavefaiththatweshallnotprovefalsetothememoriesofthemenofthemightypast.theydidtheirwork,theyleftusthesplendidheritagewenowenjoy.weinourturnhaveanassuredconfidencethatweshallbeabletoleavethisheritageunwastedandenlargedtoourchildrenandourchildrenschildren.todosowemustshow,notmerelyingreatcrises,butintheeverydayaffairsoflife,thequalitiesofpract
