论文摘要 本文以英语习语为研究对象，以语料统计为基础对英语习语作了定量、定性 分析。其主要目的是在语用学理论，特别是含意本体论的理论框架下对英语习语 意义的生成及解释进行了探索和研究，并试图构建一个意义生成机制来探讨习语 的意义，特别是比喻意是如何生成的。 本文对英语习语的研究主要围绕以下三个问题展开的： 第一，英语习语是怎样构成的? 第二，含意是如何帮助习语达到其完备表述的? 第三，英语习语是如何在含意本体论的理论框架下得到其实际意义的? 本文以当代英语习语大辞典为语料，在含意本体论的理论框架下对英语 习语进行了定量、定性分析，并得出以下结论： 一、 统计调查结果表明，在抽样调查的5 0 0 8 个习语当中具有“表意的双 层性”特点的习语共有3 6 4 9 个，占被调查习语总体的7 2 8 6 ，因此习语的一个 最主要的特点是“表意的双层性”，即字面义与比喻义。 二、“词语组合的经济性原则”是英语的一个重要特征，即用尽量少的词 语来表达一个丰富的语义内容。英语习语表达的经济性必然会导致字面义的模 糊性及语义空缺，这时就要发挥含意的补足作用来补足习语中所缺失的内容，嫁 接语义单位问的语义空缺，从而得到相对完整的字面意，及( 或) 进一步发挥含 意的阐发作用对现行表述进行阐释、发挥，以求得表述完备，即对习语进一步阐 发直到确定其比喻意。 三、习语具有文字表达的不透明性和不完备性特征。本文研究表明大部分习 语要依靠含意达到其完备表述，但各个习语的含意化程度不尽相同。本文进一步 指出，含意在对英语习语的解释过程中起着补足和阐发的作用。依据含意本体论， 含意是从镶嵌在相关语言表述中常规关系的具体内容中推导出来的，它在成语表 意过程中所起的补足和阐发作用实际上是对常规关系具体内容的解读。因此，英 语习语的意义生成过程实际上是通过常规关系来完成的。换句话说，许多英语习 语在语法关系及( 或) 意义表述上是不完备的，首先要先把习语补足为完备表述， 若此时被补足后的习语的字面意与实际意义达到一致时，就不需要再阐发了，反 之则要对习语进一步阐发直到确定其比喻意。在以上分析的基础上，我们把英语 习语分为三类：“简单型”，即只需要补足就可达到其完备表意的习语；含意型”，
