摘要 弗朗西斯霍奇森伯内特是1 9 世纪后半期至2 0 世纪初美国著 名儿童文学作家，其文学作品以细腻的笔触，对儿童问题特别是女性 儿童问题的关注而著称。使伯内特跻身本世纪最重要作家之列的作品 是秘密花园，此书从1 9 1 1 年问世至今再版无数，销售量以千万计， 并被收入许多国家的中小学课本，被誉为“儿童文学创作中最伟大的 精品之一”。 女性主义批评家从2 0 世纪8 0 年代开始对秘密花园产生兴趣 并逐渐成为伯内特评论队伍中最引人注目的生力军。对于小说女主人 公玛丽，批评家大都将其归为传统女性范畴。本文尝试提出不同观点， 说明玛丽摆脱了父权制的压抑，颠覆了传统女性性别角色原型。 对性别角色概念有两种不同理解。传统观念认为性别角色由生物 性决定，因而是固定的。而女性主义者则反对这种原型观念，她们认 为，对性别角色的形成起决定性作用的是社会环境，即社会性，因而 性别角色是可变的。伯内特本人的性别角色与其所处时代中盛行的女 性性别角色相悖，秘密花园中的女主人公玛丽正反映了她的“新 女性”特色。本文结合女权主义理论，特别是波伏娃和米莱特所提出 的关于女性性别角色的理论从秘密花园的历史背景、人物刻画 以及主题角度入手，将玛丽的性别角色与传统观念中的女性社会性别 角色进行对比，认为她确实颠覆了女性性别角色原型。首先玛丽身上 具备了许多诸如：理智、勇敢、独立等原被视为男性气质的优秀品质， 其次，通过“唤醒”花园和柯林，玛丽为“沉睡”已久的米塞尔斯威 特庄园注入了生命的活力，因此她摆脱了女性传统的从属地位，是庄 园真正意义上的主人，是男权社会的颠覆者。笔者认为，伯内特这位 新女性通过塑造突破女性原型的人物，走在了时代的前列。 关键词：伯内特，秘密花园，性别角色，原型，颠覆 a b s t r a c t f a m o
