摘要 委婉语是人类语言使用过程中的一个普遍现象，是各种文化中都存在的一 种表达方式，是一种文明社会的产物。然而，不同语言、不同文化背景下的委婉 语存在着巨大差异。英汉委婉语折射出中西方形态各异的社会文化背景，反映出 不同的社会心理状态和语言文化内涵。 笔者正是试图在前人的基础上就英汉委婉语对比闯题做进一步的研究与探 讨。论文共分为六大章：第一章简明而系统地阐述了该论文的写作动机、可比性、 研究方法及论文主要构成；第二章简要回顾了委婉语现象在国内外的研究历史及 传统上应用于委婉语研究的主要理论；第三章着力从一个较新的角度阐述委婉语 的内涵、语义特征、语用功能及分类问题；第四章是全文的重点章节。作者以美 学语言学、语言与文化的关系为理论基础，从美学和文化两个角度对英汉委婉语 差异问题进行对比分析。人的审美观念极大地影响着委婉语的产生与运用。此外， 审美意识的顽强性和功利性也与委婉语的研究紧密相关。在文化层面，笔者分别 从历史起源、价值观、文化典故、社会体制的角度切入，深刻剖析英汉委婉语的 种种差异及其文化根源；第五章阐述了该论题研究的重大意义。将英汉委婉语进 行对比研究，不仅可以帮助人们更好的了解和掌握委婉语，还有助于提高委婉语 的翻译质量，减少跨文化交际中的障碍，从而对外语教学工作产生很大助益；第 六章总结回顾全文。
