A few months later, I was in a grocery store picking out a Mothers Day card when suddenly I realized I had no one to send it to.I drove home, ordered a pizza for dinner and started a new Mothers Day tradition: Remembering my mother. Its not as easy. Id rather mail a card or make a phone call. Each Mothers Day, I pick a different theme, a different part of who she was that I want to recall. This time its some of the things she said. For example:“You will have children one day and you will know how I feel.” It was a threat more than a promise. She was right. I did and I do.“Pretty is as pretty does(行为美才是真正的美).” Im still working on that one. When I was a teenager and I dared to suggest that she shoulddo something interesting, she replied: “I work five days a week, clean my house on Saturday, go to church and visit my mama every Sunday. I dont need anything interesting. I need help.”One Christmas, when we fell on hard times she said: “Life is a bank. Sometimes you give, other times you take. Either way, its all the same bank. But try to remember how hard it is to take, because one day, you will do the giving.”The last thing she said that I cant forget: “You dont know what youve got until its gone.”I remember my mother. It is full of dangerous creatures, and some of the most dangerous are the smallest: the bacteria (细菌), viruses (病毒) and parasites (寄生虫) that kill millions of people every year. But it is possible, with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, to turn nature against itself in order to help humans. And that is why Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old researcher at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was given the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Oct 5. She is the first Chinese citizen (公民) to win a Nobel Prize in science.Tu discovered a new drug for malaria (疟疾). The disease infects (感染) around 200 million people and kills about half a million people each year, according to the Economist. Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan for discovering a new drug to treat parasitic diseases.Tu was originally trained in traditional Chinese medicine. In the late 1960s, during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Tu and her colleagues joined a government project to find a new malaria drug. They made 380 herbal extracts (草药提取物) from 200 recipes, which came from traditional Chinese medical books. The team then tested them on malaria-infected mice. That was when Tu became interested in an extract of a plant called sweet wormwood (qinghao).According to an ancient Chinese medicine book, the qinghao plant was once used to treat malaria. However, the extract they made in the lab didnt work very well. Tu thought that the effective ingredient in qinghao was being destroyed by high temperatures. So she tried to make the extract with an ether (乙醚) that has a much lower boiling point than water. In 1971, after failing more than 190 times, Tu finally made an extract that was 100 percent effective against malaria parasites. The extract was called qinghaosu, later renamed artemisinin. 25. According to this passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.Tu is the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in Science.B. It is no reason other than a lot of hard work that leads to Tus success.C.Tu shares the prize with two other persons.D.Traditional Chinese medicine contributes a lot to Tus success.26. The 200 recipes, from which the herbal extracts came from, were written down in traditional Chinese medical books.d. Tu tried to make the extract with an ether.A.cbad B. bcda C.cbda D. bcad 27. What is the underlined worditself most likely to refer to?A.Nature is the enemy of humans.B.The drug extract qinghaosu comes from many natural herbal plants.C. The natural world is full of dangerous creatures that kill millions of people every year.D.Nature is our friend who can help us.28. What is the authors attitude toward Tus research and success?A.proud B. admirable C. negative D. objectiveCThe family planning policy was introduced in the 1970s to control the fast-growing population. The policy limits most urban couples to one child and rural couples to two at most. The situation is about to change. The news released on Oct 29 after the Fifth Plenary Session (全体会议) of the 18th Communist Party of China Central Committee said that all couples will be allowed to have two children.Right now, China has one of the worlds lowest birth rates at about 1.2, according to Xinhua. It means that on average, a Chinese woman gives birth to 1.2 children in her lifetime. The two-child policy is expected to help increase the birth rate and control the aging population. It will also help to solve an imbalance between boys and girls, Lu said. The situation is serious in China, with roughly 116 boys born for every 100 girls, according to Xinhua. When a second child is allowed, the traditional preference for boys is expected to be less of a problem.Chinas economy will also benefit from the policy. Chinas rich labor resources have helped the countrys economic growth since 1978. However, the current low birth rate means there are fewer adults of working age.Chinas labor force, people aged 16 to 59, reached a peak of 940 million in 2012, and decreased to 930 million in 2014. It is estimated that the labor force will decrease by about 29 million in the decade ending in 2020.The new policy will make the working-age population decrease more slowly, Yuan Xin, a professor at Nankai University, told China Daily.“Consumption and investment started by the two-child policy will help the struggling Chinese economy to stabilize (稳定),”James Liang, an economics professor at Peking University, told China Daily. But no one is sure how long China will have to wait before seeing these effects, as rising costs in big cities have made Chinese couples less willing to have extra children. 29. According to the passage, which of the following is increasing?A. The aging population B. the working age population C. Chinas labour force D. the birth rate 30. Which is the positive factor to Chinas economy?A.Fewer adults of working age.B. The low birth rate.C.Rich labour resourcesD. Large aging population31. All the following are the advantages of the two-child policy EXCEPT_.A.To make the working age population decrease more slowly.B.To help the struggling Chinese economy to stabilize.C.To help increase the birth rate and control the aging population.D.To completely change peoples preference to boys.DIn a busy world in which people struggle with their to-do lists, it would be nice to have a personal assistant to help out. So what about a robot secretary?Recently Chinese search giant Baidu showed off its artificial intelligence assistant at the companys Baidu World conference in Beijing.According to Baidu CEO Robin Li, the new digital assistant called Duer, can help users place restaurant orders, buy movie tickets and book flights by looking at their internet search history, location, and other data.Duer has been added to the Baidu Android search app shared by millions of smartphone users across China. The company is considering the possibility of developing an independent app or even a Duer robot. Baidus achievement is an example of the rise of virtual(虚拟的) assistant software that copies the skills of human secretaries. Apple, with its Siri service, is a leader in this area. Other high-tech firms have also been catching up with similar products, such as Google Now(Google, 2012), Cortana (Microsoft,2014), and Echo(Amazon, 2014). The virtual secretaries offered by the tech giants are part of their wider efforts to master artificial intelligence and, in particular, “machine learning”. With a stronger ability to deal with large amounts of data and recognize patterns, future machines are getting better at what they do. Voice recognition is also improving quickly. Two years ago, Google Now used to miss around 25 percent of words spoken, but today it only misses 8, according to Googles Aparna Chen.As virtual assistants become popular, the future of the consumer Internet is likely to look different: instead of typing keywords into search engines, future users can enjoy a more personalized service. Meanwhile, individual apps will also be taken over by powerful software assistants. 32. What can Duer do according to Robin Li?a. Do what human secretaries can.b. Place restaurant orders.c.
