university in this country, you may be curious to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. these are the questions i want to discuss with you today.first, lets talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. no matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. in lectures, its very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information on a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. so it isnt enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. in a typical week, you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. the discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework. in large universities, graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections.if your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, youll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. this means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non science majors do. on the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.41. we can learn from the passage that university professors .a. spend about 5 hours on lectures each weekb. must join the students in the discussion sectionsc. require the students to read beyond the textbooksd. prefer to use textbooks in their lectures42. a discussion section does not include .a. talking over what the students have read about the coursesb. working under the guidance of university professorsc. discussing the problems related to the students homeworkd. raising questions about what a professor has said in a lecture43. according to the author, science majors .a. read and write less than non science majorsb. have to work harder than non science majorsc. spend less time on their studies than non science majorsd. consider experiments more important than discussions44. the main purpose of this text is .a. to persuade the students to attend lecturesb. to encourage the students to take part in discussionsc. to advise the students to choose proper majors d. to help the students to learn about university life.battend the next forum!for the last twelve years cpsb has during the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. many of gershwins songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in new york city. these plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. many of his songs have remained popular as ever. over the years they have been sung and played in every possible wayfrom jazz to country. in the 1920s, there was a debate in the united states about jazz music. could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? in 1924, jazz musician and orchestra leader paul whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. and in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called rhapsody in blue. gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. the audience were thrilled when they heard his music. it made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. in 1928, gershwin went to paris. he applied to study composition(作曲)with the well-known musician nadia boulanger, but she rejected him. she was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. while there, gershwin wrote an american in paris. when it was first performed, critics(评论家)were divided over the music. some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. but it quickly became popular in europe and the united states. it still remains one of his most famous works. george gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. he was only thirty-nine years old. newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. people mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written. 48. many of gershwins musical works were.a. written about new yorkers b. composed for paul whitemanc. played mainly in the countryside d. performed in various brain cancer research started after gershwins death.dit is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. it is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether.road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. it takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. on the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. a friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. but such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. many drivers nowadays dont even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.however, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. the same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. an experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. unfortunately, modern drivers cant
