She copied their actions and way of lifeeating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired.Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400-450 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes. Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine form the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. “This is a species of mammal(哺乳类动物),” said the words below it. “It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good.” The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read, “This is a species of mammal,” but then went on: “It is the most destructive(破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good.”56. The text mainly talks about _.A. Diane FosseyB. the gorillas in RwandaC. the protection of the gorillasD. the film Gorillas in the Mist57. We can learn from the text that _.A. Gorillas in the Mist was based on Fosseys experiencesB. lowland gorillas live longer than mountain gorillasC. King Kong showed us that a gorilla is admirableD. Diane Fossey was murdered by a gorilla58. What message can we get from the two photos in the magazine?A. Gorillas are mans close friends.B. Both man and the gorilla need to be saved.C. Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies.D. Man should live peacefully with the gorilla.BSay you are a 17th century construction worker whos worked long and hard to build a splendid tower for the dead wife of your emperor. Now say that the emperor orders your fingertips cut off so you can never build another one. Yes, that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale behind the construction is just as impressive(印象深刻的) as the building itself.First, theres the emperor of northern India, Shah Jehan, also called the King of the World. In 1612, Shah Jehan Married Mumtaz Mahal. Madly in love, they had 14 children over the next 20 years. But then sadness came. As Mumtaz was about to give birth to child number 14, she said she had heard her unborn baby cry out. It was a sign of death. And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial(纪念物) to celebrate their love. When the heartbroken Jehan appeared eight days after his wifes death, his people were shocked to see that his coal-black hair had turned snow-white.Putting away his sadness, Jehan ordered his wifes dying wish carried out. More than 20,000 workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 1653, Jehan Placed Mumtazs remains in the center under the building. And then, son number five, Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father. Jehan lived the rest of his days-eight years, to be exact-imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal. Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the timeless treasure from a distance. But never again would he be allowed to visit it-until he was buried next to his wife.Today 25,000 people visit the Taj Mahal each day. Though the reason for building the tower was a strange, sad story, those who see its breath-taking beauty are reminded of the happiness that inspired (激发的灵感) its construction.59. Richard, who worked for a business company, was eager to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job. They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry. “We knew it had to be a specialty store because we couldnt match the big chains dollar for dollar,” says Mary. One figure caught her attention: Shed read somewhere that roughly 20 percent of books sold were mysteries(推理小说), and many buyers spent more than $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers. On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Caf near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the familys money to start a shop. To cover the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from relatives and from a bank. The store merely broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and served dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She a
