On the left is todays date, on the right is the same day, but five years ago. Ask one student to stand up to describe that student now. T: Tom is tall. (write tall on the left) Was Tom tall five years ago? S : No, he was short. T: Thats right. He was short. But now he is tall. We can describe him like this: Tom used to be short, but now he is tall. We use “used to” to talk about how people or things have changed.Step 2 Presentation1. Teach activity 1a. This part is designed to introduce some adjectives to describe people. Have students look at the chart in 1a and point at two words, appearance and personality. Explain them to the class and let students think of some adjectives relating to these two words, and fill in the blanks. Call students attention to the picture and get students to describe the changes. Then invite a pair of students to read the sample conversation in the picture.2. Teach activities 1b & 1c. These two parts are designed to give students some listening and oral practice. Read the instructions together with the class, and ask students to look at the uncompleted sentences in the box. Play the tape. Students listen carefully and fill in the blanks with the words they hear. After that, get students to make conversations using the information in 1a and 1b. in the end, invite one or two pairs of students to act out their conversations to the class.Step 3 Practice1. Teach activities 2a & 2b.These two parts are designed to provide students with listening and speaking practice using target language.Ask students to look at the pictures and put forward a question: What are they doing?Listen to the tape and check the words you hear.Ask students to read the conversation and jump the blank lines. Listen to the tape again and fill in the blanks with the words they hear. Check the answers and read the conversation again aloud. Then explain some language points to the class.2. Teach activity 2c. This part is designed to provide students with oral practice using the target language. Have students practice the conversation in the box and make new conversations with the information in listening before. This part is designed to provide reading practice using the target language to improve students reading and comprehensive skills. First, ask students to read the conversation loudly to get the main idea. Match the statements with each paragraph. Underline some difficult words and sentences, and find out the answers to the questions at the same time. Give students several minutes to read the passage individually. Then, have a student read the article to the class. If necessary, correct the pronunciation mistakes. Invite some students to answer the questions. T: Who did the writer interview for this months Young World magazine? S1: A 19-year-old Asian pop star Candy Wang. T: Did she use to be shy? S2: Yes, she did. T: How did she deal with her shyness? S3: She took up singing to deal with her shyness. T: Whats she like now? S4: She is not shy anymore and loves singing in front of crowds. T: Great.
