2014高考英语阅读理解基础精品练习题(56)及答案阅读理解for my grandmothers 70th birthday, my family and i visited south korea. while there, i was attentive to korean high schools and students.i was surprised by how different koreas public high schools are from americas. korean high schools can be all-girls, all-boys or co-ed (男女同校的)unlike our standard co-ed high schools. there are three grades: “go 1(10th) ”, “go 2” (1l th) and “go 3” (12th). “go”is the first syllable of the word “go-deung hakkyo”, which, simply translated, is “high school”.in america, unless you want to go to a private school, you dont have to take an entrance exam. in korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools. another difference i couldnt help but notice was the students appearance. with very few exceptions, all wear uniforms. a name tag (标牌)with the students name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn. girls skirts cant be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye (染)your hair or wear accessories (装饰品)except small earrings. there are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes.the final difference was the setup of the classes. there may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city. although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which i think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. there are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. they just have ten-minute breaks between subjects. in each class, students are ranked by their grades. this causes strict competition, and korean students do a lot of studying. to help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. one other fact that helped me appreciate living in america is that koreans have school on saturdays. although its only a half day, i think i speak for most americans when i say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a saturday.koreas public high schools are clearly different from americas. i had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now i have a clear picture of how different they are.59. how many main differences are mentioned between koreas public high school and americas?a. 3. b. 4. c. 5. taj mahal(泰姬陵) is to open on moonlit evenings 20 years after security fears ended night visits.indias supreme court will allow the famous monument to love to open four nights a month, at the beginning for three months.the taj, built in the 1600s by the mughal emperor shah jahan as a shrine(神殿) for his wife, is a world heritage site.only 400 visitors will be let in each night, and parking limitations will be strictly controlled around the marble mausoleum(陵墓)the supreme court announcement came as state officials in uttar pradesh were celebrating the tajs 350th anniversary close to its site in the city of agra.state tourism minister kaukab hamid described the ruling as “heartening”“this reopening of the taj for moonlight viewing is going to draw fantastic crowds from across the globe,” he said.“we will ensure strict security and follow visitor guidelines laid down by the supreme court.”tourist chiefs said more than 300,000 foreigners visited the taj mahal site in 2003, but numbers are down since the terror attacks in the us on 11 september 2001.night visits to the taj, once a romantic highlight of any visit to india, were banned in 1984 for fear that militant(好战的) sikhs battling the government would attack the shrine.the sikh insurgency(锡克教叛乱) ended in the mid1990s, but indian authorities have remained unwilling to let visitors back to the taj after sunset.during the height of tensions between india and pakistan in 2001, officials drew up plans to camouflage(伪装) the taj to hid it from possible pakistani air attacks.shah jahan built the taj mahal as an expression of love for his wife mumtaz mahal.located on the banks of river yamuna, the shrine is largely made of white marble that reflects the changes of colour visible during sunset and clear, moonlit nights.it became a unesco world heritage site in 1983, meaning the indian supreme court must rule on major works or changes likely to influence site.5why were visitors banned on visiting the tai mahal in the evening 20 years ago?a. because the indian government feared that the increasing visitors would destroy it.b. because there were the terror attacks in the us.c. because the indian authorities were unwilling to let visitors visit at night.d. because the indian authorities were afraid their conflict with sikhs would lead them to attack the shrine.6what is the attitude of state tourism minister kaukab hamid when he described the new rule?a. disapproving. b. uncertain.c. cheerful. d. disappointing.7which of the following statements is not true according to the text?a. the taj mahal will be open 48 nights a year.b. the number of visitors at night is strictly limited.c. its the indian supreme court that is responsible for the security of the taj.d. the project of the taj mahal was completed 350 years ago.8what would be the best title for the text?a. the reopening of the taj mahal.b. the tai mahalmoonlit viewing again.c. the glorious history of the taj mahal.d. the taj mahala world heritage site.答案5d。细节理解题。从文中第十段“night visits to the taj. were banned in 1984 for fear that militant(好战的) sikhs battling the government would attack the shrine.” 阅读理解-athe first harvest means the death of the crops as grain is gathered, and the thanksgiving of the people to the goddesses who provided them with life sustaining grains.late july and early august mark the middle of summer and the beginning of the harvest season. famine (饥荒) was common during july as the previous years harvest supplies were almost totally used up. harvesting grains in august ensured the continuance of life and was recognized by many cultures as a time of thanksgiving.in ancient rome the grain goddess ceres was honored on the first harvest called ceresalia in her honor. our modern word cereal comes from her name. other goddesses celebrated at the first harvest were demeter, persephone, venus and the corn mother. many native american tribes honor the corn grandmother during the festival of green corn. it was held during the full moon when the corn was ready to be harvested. the celebration lasted for several days and was a time to be thankful and a time of forgiveness.lughnasadh was a happy time regarded as the first of three harvest festivals. lughnasadh honors the god lugh, and his fostermother taillte who died while clearing the fields of ireland for agriculture. in old irish lunasa means “august”. the celts celebrate this day from sunset of august 1 to sunset on august 2 as the wake of lugh, the sunking whose light began to decline after the summer solstice(夏至). at_this_time_oaths(誓言)_were_taken_and_contracts_were_signed.this day was known to the saxons as lammas, or loafmass, a time when grains were harvested and baked into bread. the grain was harvested, giving its life so that people might live. the grain was made into bread, and the bread was symbolic of the gods. christians later adopted this holiday as a day when bread, made from the first fruits of the harvest, was brought to the church to be blessed.august is a time to reflect on the past year, on things that have come to fruition and things that failed. a time to let go of regrets and say farewell to things that have passed and preserve all the fruits that have been gathered to hold onto for future memories.5the passage should be entitled _.a. august harvest festivalsb. august traditionc. gathering graind. special august time6what was the significance of harvesting grains in august?a. it welcomed the death of the crops.b. it provided the chance of thanksgiving.c. it guaranteed the continuance of life.d. it marked the middle of summer.7which of the following is not a close relationship according to the passage?a. ancient romansthe grain goddess ceres.b. native americansthe corn grandmother.c. christiansthe god lugh and his fostermother taillte.d. the celtslugh, the sunking.8from the last sentence of the 4th paragraph “at this time oaths were taken and contracts were signed”, we can infer that the celts are _.a. happy at that time b. serious about the dayc. are full of hope d. thankful at that time答案七月底八月初是收获季节的开始,此时收获的粮食保证了生命的延续,人们把这个时候看做是向诸神表示感激的时机,感谢神灵给他们维系生命的粮食。 last week, we explained that the planet mars has passed “opposition. ”it passed a point opposite the sun. this week, we tell about the planets surprising motion(运动)among the stars. for thousands of years, people have recognized that planets travel among the stars. the planets generally follow the path taken by the sun through the sky. the suns path is called the ecliptic. the groups of stars along the ecliptic are called the zodiac. the motion of the planets can be confusing at times. everyone knows the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. but this is caused by the turning motion of the earth. planets generally move from west to east. however, mars will appear to move backward for about two months this year. this happens because the earth is overtaking mars on its way around the sun. mars began its backward, or westward, motion on may 11th, it will start moving eastward again on july 19th. mars apparent motion has been a mystery to astronomers for hundreds of years. most early theories of the solar system argued that the sun and planets turned around the earth. but the sudden westward motion of mars presented a problem. why would mars move west for two months when it nears “opposition”?in 1543, a polish church worker named nicolas copernicus published a different theory. his theory said the earth and planets moved around the sun in perfectly circular orbits. copernicus theory was simpler. but his sun centered system still did not explain the observed motion of mars very well.finally, a german mathematician named johannes kepler published a complete theory of the motion of the planets in 1619. he had carefully studied the motion of mars for many years.johannes kepler discovered that the planets do not move in circular orbits around the sun. instead, they travel in flattened orbits called ellipses. mars elliptical orbit is the cause of its unusua
