The extraordinary world-record performance by Ye Shiwen, 16, in Saturdays womens 400m individual medley final has raised eyebrows, with a leading swimming coach describing it as disturbing. Ye took more than a second off the world record and five seconds off her personal best, and completed the final 50m in a time faster than US swimmer Ryan Lochte in winning the mens equivalent race. The International Olympic Committee, however, played down suggestions of doping. Arne Lundqvist, chairman of the IOCs medical commission, said there was no reason to doubt that her swim was genuine, but said he could not be sure that China had been thorough about testing its athletes. Should I have my suspicions, I keep them for myself and take any action, if so, in order to find out whether something is wrong or not, he said after repeated questioning about Ye at a press conference. You ask me specifically about this particular swimming. I say no, I have not personally any reason other than to applaud what has happened, until I have further facts, if so. John Leonard, head of the World Swimming Coaches Association, earlier told the Guardian newspaper that Yes performance was disturbing. Stephanie Rice of Australia, the previous world record holder in the 400m individual medley and defending Olympic champion, described Yes swim as insanely fast. Rice finished sixth in the race. Ye herself was quoted by the China News Service as saying: My results come from hard work and training and I would never use any banned drugs. Lundqvist was asked if Chinese swimmers had been pre-tested prior to the games as much as other competitors, and replied: I simply dont know who has been pre-tested and not been pre-tested. But he did say that a sudden improvement in an athletes performance would create a risk for sport and may be a reason to target certain groups of athletes. Of course should a sudden rise in performance occur in a particular person, we could regard that possibly as a reason to do it, he said. Jonathan Harris, head of anti-doping for the London organising committee, said: Enhancements in performance is something we focus on so we target those athletes. China has a chequered history in swimming. After winning 12 of 16 womens titles at the 1994 world championships in Rome, seven swimmers failed drugs tests a month later. There were similar failed tests at the 1998 world championships in Perth, and China then maintained a much lower profile in swimming, only resurfacing as a leading nation at the Beijing games in 2008. 5 Ye Shiwens 400m world record at London Olympics is 4:28.43, so her personal best record is_. They include costumes, a book read by JK Rowling, programmes and even confetti that was fired into the air as the British team entered the 80,000-seat stadium. While Games officials insisted they were happy that any props “go to a good home” other performers labelled the decision as “crass”, “disrespectful” and not in the spirit of the Friday nights performance. On Monday night, bids for a Freddie Mercury costume were starting at 5000, an “Industrial Revolution” costume was on sale for 2500 while a male nurse outfit was posted for more than 2000. Another 1990s florescence colour outfit was on sale for 1500 while a David Bowie costume, also worn during the music section of the show, was retailing for 600. The official short story book used by the Harry Potter author, who read the opening to JM Barries Peter Pan to the children of Great Ormond Street Hospital, was put on sale by an unnamed doctor for 30, plus 4.50 postage on eBay.But some performers have been left angry by the decision of their colleagues to “cash in” on the ceremony. One “Industrial Revolution” performer, who did not want to be named, told The Daily Telegraph: “I think it is a bit crass really. While we were told they were ours and were not told not to auction them, I still think it is very disrespectful.”Another said: “A group of us joked . as to how much our costumes would sell on eBay but it was very tongue in cheek. It is not really in the spirit, is it?” But Jessykar Donald, 29, defended her decision to auction her costumes on eBay for 5,000 in order to invest in a cupcake business. Miss Donald, from Shepperton, Surrey, said: “Although itll be a shame to miss out on keeping my costumes I have decided to sell them. “Having been inspired by the spir
