The dust particles of dust was shown at a higher magnification than anything outside of Earth that has been imaged before. The rounded particle measured only about one micrometer, or one millionth of a meter, across.Taking this image required the highest resolution microscope operated off Earth and a specially designed device to hold the Martian dust, said Tom Pike, a Phoenix science team member from Imperial College London. We always knew it was going to be technically very challenging to image particles this small. The device that imaged the dust speck is called an atomic force microscope, which maps the shape of particles in three dimensions by scanning them with a sharp tip at the end of a spring. The atomic force microscope can detail the shapes of particles as small as about 100 nanometers. And this wont be the last dust particle that Phoenix will image. After this first success, were now working on building up a portrait gallery of the dust on Mars,Pike said.Dust exists everywhere on Mars, coating the surface and giving it its rusty red color. Dust particles also color the Martian sky pink and feed storms that regularly envelope the planet. The ultra-fine dust is the medium that actively links gases in the Martian atmosphere to processes in Martian soil, so it is critically important to understanding Marsenvironment, the researchers said. The $420-million Phoenix mission is analyzing the dust and subsurface ice layers of Mars arctic regions to look for signs of potential past habitability. The particle seen in the atomic force microscope image was part of a sample scooped by the robotic arm from theSnow White trench and delivered to Phoenixs microscope station in early July. 1、单选题The dust particle on Mars is the small particle that has been imaged outside of Earth. You could stuff hundreds of them into the period at the end of this sentence. One day a similar engine might power a tiny mechanical doctor that would travel through your body to remove your disease.2 The motor works by shuffling atoms between two molten metal droplets in a carbon nanotube. One droplet is even smaller than the other. When a small electric current is applied to the droplets, atoms slowly get out of the larger droplet and join the smaller one. The small droplet grows - but never gets as big as the other droplet - and eventually bumps into the large droplet. As they touch, the large droplet rapidly sops up the atoms it had previously lost. This quick shift in energy produces a power stroke.3 The technique exploits the fact that surface tension - the tendency of atoms or molecules to resist separating - becomes more important at small scales. Surface tension is the same thing that allows some insects to walk on water.4 Although the amount of energy produced is small - 20 microwatts - it is quite impressive in relation to the tiny scale of the motor. The whole setup is less than 200 nanometers on a side,or hundreds of times smaller than the width of a human hair. If it could be scaled up to the size of an automobile engine, it would be 100 million times more powerful than a Toyota Camrys 225 horsepower V6 engine.5 In 1988, Professor Richard Muller and colleagues made the first operating micromotor, which was 100 microns across, or about the thickness of a human hair. In 2003, Zettls group created the first nanoscale motor. In 2006, they built a nanoconveyor, which moves tiny particles along like cars in a factory.6 Nanotechnology engineers try to mimic nature, building things atom-by-atom. Among other things, nanomotors could be used in optical circuits to redirect light, a process called optical switching. Futurists envision a day when nanomachines, powered by nanomotors, travel inside your body to find disease and repair damaged cells. 1、单选题Paragraph 2 _ AAn Introduction of a Toyotas 225 Horsepower V6 Engine BA Description of the Nanomotor in Terms of Power and Size CSurface Tension DPrevious Inventions of Nanoscale Products EThe Working Principle of the Nanomotor FPossible Fields of Application in the Future 答案:E 解析: 2、单选题Paragraph 4 _ AAn Introduction of a Toyotas 225 Horsepower V6 Engine BA Description of the Nanomotor in Terms of Power and Size CSurface Tension DPrevious Inventions of Nanoscale Products EThe Working Principle of the Nanomotor FPossible Fields of Application in the Future 答案:B 解析: 3、单选题Paragraph 5 _ AAn Introduction of a Toyotas 225 Horsepower V6 Engine BA Description of the Nanomotor in Terms of Power and Size CSurface Tension DPrevious Inventions of Nanoscale Products EThe Working Principle of the Nanomotor FPossible Fields of Application in the Future 答案:D 解析: 4、单选题Paragraph 6 _ AAn Introduction of a Toyotas 225 Horsepower V6 Engine BA Description of the Nanomotor in Terms of Power and Size CSurface Tension DPrevious Inventions of Nanoscale Products EThe Working Principle of the Nanomotor FPossible Fields of Application in the Future 答案:F 解析: 5、单选题Doctors envision that the nanomotor would travel through human bodies to_. S. Scientists Confirm Water on MarsNASA scientists said that Mars was covered once by vast lakes, flowing rivers and a variety of other wet environments that had the potential to support life.Laboratory tests aboard NASA!s Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The landers robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples. We have water, said William Boynton of the University of Arizona, lead scientist for the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer, or TEGA. This is the first time Martian water has been touched and tasted. The robotic arm is a critical part of the Phoenix Mars mission. It is needed to trench into the icy layers of northern polar Mars and deliver samples to instruments that will analyze what Mars is made of, what its water is like, and whether it is or has ever been a possible habitat for life. The soil sample came from a trench approximately 2 inches deep. When the robotic arm firstreached that depth, it hit a hard layer frozen soil. Two attempts to deliver samples of icy soil on days when fresh material was exposed foiled, when the samples became stuck inside the scoop. Most of the material in Wednesdays samptel had been exposed to the air for two days, letting some of the water in the sample vaporize away and making the soil easier to handle.Mars is giving us some surprises, said Phoenix principal investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona. Were excited because surprises are where discoveries come from. One surprise is how the soil is behaving. The ice-rich Iayers stick to the scoop when poised in the sun above the deck, different from what we expected, from all the Mars simulation testing weve done so far. Since landing on May 25, Phoenix has been studying mil with a chemistry lab, TEGA, a microscope, a conductivity probe and cameras. The science team is trying to determine whether the water ice ever thaws enough to be available for biology and if carbon-containing chemicals and other raw materials for life are present. The mission is examining the sky as well as the ground. A Canadian instrument is using a laser beam to study dust and clouds overhead. Its a 30-watt light bulb giving us a、laser show Mars, said Victoria Hipkin of the Canadian Space Agency.A full-circle, color panorama of Phoenixs surroundirgs also has been completed by the spacecraft. The details and patterns we see in the ground show an ice-dominated terrain as far as the eye can see, said Mark Lemmon of Texas A & M Uaiversity, lead scientist for Phoenixs Surface Stereo Imager camera. They help us plan measurements were making within reach of the robotic arm and interpret those measurements on a wider scale. 1、单选题What was discovered by NASAs Phoenix Mars Lander on Mars?
