IntroductionThe world has been changing rapidly and so many serious problems are happening in the world.We believe that one of the ways to make a better world is LMTV program. However, the program has not enough been developed yet for solving these problems and to make bigger movement in both of quality and quantity. So, we need to work together beyond the organization and country.This handbook is a guidebook for organizations, which organize LMTV programs. We have made this first edition of the LMTV handbook through the first LMTV seminar in Asia, 1st to 10th November 2004, held in Tokyo JAPAN organized by NVDA and ALLIANCE in cooperation with NICE (Japan), IIWC (Indonesia), NIFC (Nepal), MCE (Mongolia), IWO (Korea), Greenway (Thailand), YES-Philippines (Philippines), SJ (France), FIYE (Poland), ESTYES(Estonia).In this book, we put forward good and failure experiences, lessons, fruits and outcomes to share and improve our programs. Also we put a lot of ideas for future development. We hope this handbook will help somehow to organize better LMTV program in your organization.This handbook will never be completed since we are always looking for better program and our goal is still very far. Volunteer is staying in a place for a long time and working for society, community, and public, to make solution and better situation of the society. Voluntary work is divers, from Environment to Social works.As a volunteer working on a long term project, you will be either a: Middle Term Volunteer (MTV), who works in a project for a period of 1 to 6 months. Long Term Volunteer (LTV), who works in a project for a period of 6months or longer. These LMTV programs are usually an individual or small number of volunteers program.LMTV includesMiddle Term Workcamp (MTW), which working as a group of 3 or more peoplefor 1 month to 6 months.Long Term Workcamp (MTW), which working as a group of 3 or more people for 6 monthsor longer.A-3. The history of LMTV in Asia and EuropeDevelopment of Long Term Activities Service Civil International (SCI) was founded in 1920 with the main purpose of providing direct relief work after natural disasters and war. In the first few decades of SCI many volunteers worked for periods of several months. As SCI grew bigger and involved more volunteers, the emphasis changed to providing summer work for volunteers on 2-4 week projects. By the 1970s and 1980s, there were very few longer term activities. In Asia, LMTV has started in 19 and it has been developing rapidly these years. The field of LMTV activities Needless to say, we organize LMTV program according to local needs. Local needs are various, ranging from teaching English to planting trees. Also there are many potential needs that we have not reached yet. An idea of having environment education centre, with a model of organic farming and garbage recycling system. The role of volunteers is to set up the basic foundation and knowledge of the project.2. Teaching program of garbage recycling at school with special qualification of the volunteers (at least the volunteers know about organic farming). Criteria for projects and Local PartnerCriteria for ProjectsWe are NGO/NPOs and working for the better world. So, we are not working for profit orientation. The project we are working on should meet some minimal criteria to ensure that volunteers work under acceptable conditions. The program usually has a host organization. The selection of the host organization is also important to organize LMTV programs.Criteria for projects Project should have:* Clear aims and goals.* Non profit orientation.* Useful and clear work to do by the volunteers* Ability to meet the local needs. * Clear agreement before, during, after projects between volunteers, hosting and sending organization* Aims of project should be in accordance with the local of life and with the aims of the sending organization, human rights, environment care, children care, look at the priorities* Project should be involving long term issues and what will happen next.Guarantee Living condition of volunteers* Safety condition and structure * Availability of basic standard of accommodation* Sufficient documents for visa.* Living cost food, accommodation, transportation * Guarantee human rights of the volunteers (racism, sexual discrimination ect )Criteria for Local partner Who is the local partner = An individual or group / organizationthat received the volunteers to work with in the field through receiving organization. Criteria of local partner* Non profit* Having similar aim* Capable to provide the work and host the volunteers.* Try to cover meal, accommodation, training for the volunteers.* Effective, meaningful, necessary program and work * Give a recommendation* Agree with the aim of the works and project* Keep good cooperation with national hosting organization * Care to the volunteers (not as a labor, sexual harassment, too much care)* Able to speak English as formal language of communication * Dont expect money from volunteers* Guarantying the security. Meetings and SeminarsParticipating in conferences, meeting with special theme of Social, environment, education, social works, agriculture, youth, NPOs, etc can be good ways. Also, your organization can organize these kinds of meetings.b. People to peopleFor most of organizations, people to people seems to be the most effective way. So, talk with others or showing your programs are good ways. To tell them effectively, making visual information of your organization, projects are very important.c. Mass media Mass media (TV, Radio, Newspaper, Magazine, etc) is also very good tool to inform about your organization to many people.
