you can have a guess.s: he escaped from the room and then maybe he found a job.s: maybe he was hanged by the managers. t: that is your guess. but what on earth happened later? today we will listen to a section chosen from the novel “oliver twist”, which tells us what happened after olive asked for more soup. step iii pre-listeninglet the students make some predictions according to the sentences given before listen to the tape.t: turn to page 34, activity 1. look at these sentences which are chosen from the listening passage that you will listen. first read the sentences and guess what is happening.s: i guess he fell into the hand of a gang of thieves.s: after prediction, check the meanings of some of the vocabulary given. collar: the part of a shirt, coat etc that fits around your neckdrag: to pull someone somewhere where they do not want to go, in a way that is not gentlelet go: to stop holding something or someonerough: a rough area is a place where there is a lot of violence or crimescream: to make a loud high noise with your voice because you are hurt, frightened, excited etct: now look at activity 2. work in pairs and discuss the questions. three minutes for you. three minutes later. t: time is up. the first one, is the neighborhood safe?s: the neighborhood is not safe. because it said it was a rough neighborhood.t: ok, the next one, why dont people try to help oliver?s: because they are cold-hearted.t: yes, the last one, where does the man take olive?s: he took olive to the place where the thieves live.t: lets listen to the passage to check your guess. ok?step iv listeninggive the students several seconds to scan the instructions and the questions in activity 3. make sure they know what to do. ask them to make some notes while listening. t: when you scan the questions, i am sure you can get some information related to the listening material. it can help you to understand the passage more easily. now lets listen to the tape. after listening, check their answers in class. then deal with activity 4. t: i will play the tape again. listen carefully and decide who says the statements in the table. only when you understand the characters of the people in the novel, can you give the right answers. this time, you should put you emphasis on the dialogues between people. clear?ss: yes!after listening, check the answers in class and explain some difficult listening points if necessary.step v speaking(2)deal with speaking (2) on page 36. let the students talk about their feelings after listening to what happed to olive later. t: after listening to the passage, how did you feel?
