本科生毕业论文题 目(中文):英文原版电影在高中英语教学的应用 (英文):The Apllication of Original English Movies in Senior High School English Teaching 学生姓名: 学 号 系 部: 外语系 专业年级: 英语专业 指导教师: The Apllication of Original English Movies in Senior High School English Teaching摘 要随着经济全球化,作为国际语言的英语在近年来引起了越来越多的重视,然而传统的高中英语教学手段存在很多问题,不能很好地满足人们对英语应用的需要。在高考的压力下,一些高中英语教师仅仅着重于对学生进行语法训练,这样一来很容易就导致课堂无聊,学生很难了解英美文化,对英语语言的学习兴趣提不起来;并且还出现这样的问题,一些英语考试分数很高的学生反倒不能流利地用英文对话。针对当今高中学生在学习英语过程中遇到的问题,本课题与英语专业学生学习经验相结合,站在教师的角度上分析原版电影在教学中的应用,并提出运用其要达到的目标,必须遵守的原则和合理应用的方法。通过对教案与教学方法在细节上的讨论,论文会说明英文原版电影将有利于英语教学。对这一方法进行研究和比较对解决高中英语教学中的问题和提高高中英语教学的效率具有积极的意义。关键词:英文原版电影;高中英语教学;合理应用AbstractWith economic globalization, English, as an international working language, is drawing more and more attention in almost every field in recent years. However, the traditional way of teaching language in senior high school has not met the need of this development. Under the pressure of college entrance examination, some teachers just pay excessive attention to grammar training, which in fact makes language learning a rather boring and lack of knowing the west culture. Whats more, many students who can get a high score in examination often lack the ability to speak English fluently.In view of the English study process at which the senior high school students encounter some problems nowadays, the essay, with the experience of learning English and on the teachers point of view, analyses the goals of the application of original English movies in senior high school English teaching; the principles of using them and how to use it appropriately. Using original English movies in senior high school English teaching belongs to the new ways of teaching English.With economical globalization, English, as an international working language, is drawing more and more attention in almost every field in recent years. In many peoples point of view, a good master of English is now a necessity to ensure the young generation with a good career and a bright future. However, the traditional way of teaching language in senior high school has not met the need of this development. Under the pressure of college entrance examination, some teachers just pay excessive attention to grammar training, which in fact makes language learning a rather boring and lack of knowing the west culture (刘文娟, 2006a). Whats more, many students who can get a high score in examination often lack the ability to speak English fluently.This analysis about the present situation in senior high school English teaching is elaborate. It is the general phenomena that grammar-translation method is still lots of teachers preference. And as the personal experience, so many classmates of mine and I also see ourselves as victims of the examination-oriented education system. We feel less delight when we study English from middle school, and that is one of the reasons why so many students are not interested in English and cannot learn it well. Thus, it is needed to take measure to change this situation2 Literature Review2.1 Current Situation of ResearchSince the development of science and technology are gradually valued by the whole society in recent years, the reform of the English class has been increasingly recognized (李爽, 2008). In this digital world, the combination of sound and vision is quite dynamic and easily accessible. By adopting this resource, both teachers and students can enjoy more liberty and creativity in class. Hence, there are more facilities, such as multimedia, which can be used in class. In this sense, combining English learning with the appreciation of original English movies effectively brings teachers attention. Actually, teaching English through the original movies as a new teaching method has been carried out in many colleges. The feedback from students has proved that with the broad development of this teaching method involved in intonation, wording, speech, thinking and culture students can make further progress. As the communicative approach is gradually valued by the people, videos not only provide a form of entertainment to people, but also are used as a good way to teach or learn English.It is a fact that we have taken the advantages of original movies in our college English learning. Different from previous generations, when we enter the university, we have the condition to play computer, to enjoy the multimedia and other teaching methods. That is owed to the development of science and technology. At the beginning of our college English study, we all feel surprise to such free and various ways to learn English because we never experience them before. That shows that under the pressure of college entrance examination, many senior high schools are still not benefited by this new teaching method. How to combine original English movie to the senior high English teaching is till need to study. 2.2 The Middle School English SyllabusIn The Middle School English Syllabus, we can read the goals to middle school English teaching. The first is goals of language. It is divided to three parts: cultivation of students ability in communicating in English, cultivation of students ability in reading and cultivation of students self-learning ability. The first part is about communicating ability, it emphasizes this ability not only in reading but also in speaking. Reaching this goal need to follow the learning disciplines, and one of them is let students learning English in interactive way, making sure that they have the chance to speaking out in English. The third part talks about leading students to learn English by themselves. They need to pay attention to the training of listening and speaking English. The second goal is education of thought and feeling. Through the class the students should realize the feeling of love, sympathy, mercy, kindheartedness, loyalty and so on, and their interesting, inquisitiveness, passion, will and perseverance. All these have close relationship with the teaching material and teaching method. The third one is cultivation of cultural quality. Language is the carrier of culture; a language stores the social experience of an ethnic group, and response the basic features of its culture. Thus, language learning cannot exist alone without realizing the culture, and if a person learning the language without knowing its culture, he will be very hard to use this language well. Knowing the knowledge of an ethnic group well, it will decrease the mistakes in English learning. So cultivation of cultural quality in English teaching is indispensable. The last goals are development of intellectual resources. Intelligence contains observation, attention, and memory power, thinking power, imagination and creativity. To development them, teacher needs to use the decent way to guide students use different senses at the same time, it can stimulate the brain to work better. And also teacher should try the best to arouse students interesting so that they can keep their attention to learning. In addition, different ways to organize the activities in class will up the atmosphere then raise students memory power(田式国,2008).All these goals in English syllabus reflect the better teaching thought and method should be put to use by English teacher, and movies use can be considered as one of the new way to adapt the social need and to reach the goals. 2.3 Definitions 2.3.1 Situational Teaching ModeUsing movies in English teaching is a kind of way to implement situational teaching mode. This teaching mode is constructive on the base of real events or problems which have a universal appeal. It starts from building a decent teaching situation, emphasizing the interactive influence between individual and environment; through communication between teacher and students and experience of students to the situation, teacher can achieve interaction of many dimensions in real sense, develop students interesting to learning English and stimulate the innovative potential(吴长庚 & 范安平,2007). With the development of study in innovation education and reform on new curriculum, situational teaching is gradually valued and its worth and function are already approved by people. American educator and philosopher John Dewey said: learning bases on the experience of real world (real situation). Scholars in our country also said: knowledge has situational nature; knowledge is part of activity, background and culture, and is development distantly in activity and ample situation. The theoretical principle of situational teaching is constructirism. The view of constructivism is that the best way for students to finish the construction of learning knowledge is not only let them to listen to the teacher to impart knowledge, but also should stress to ask them to experience the real environment. 2.3.2 Innovatory Teaching AtmosphereWhen discussing using movies in English teaching, innovatory teaching atmosphere is worth to be known. Classroom-teaching atmosphere is the mix of feeling and circumstance, containing surroundings, teaching material and emotion of teacher and students. Traditional teaching way stresses rote, it does not pay enough attention to create teaching atmosphere and notice the communication and interaction between teacher and students. And in modern times, people still believe knowledge is the summary of experience, recapitulative knowledge already reflects the essence of the real situation, and knowledge can be used naturally in the real situation after learning. Actually, the truth is contrast, the phenomenon of high scores and low abilities is the evidence(吴长庚 & 范安平,2007). The classroom-teaching view in nowadays is that when using the traditional way to learn abstract knowledge and principles, learners will be hard to deal with the problems in real situation through these knowledge learned in class. Overlooking the experience of teaching atmosphere in learning process will have negative effect to students master of knowledge. Using movies in English teaching is a good way to create decent teaching atmosphere. It can increase students mental safety and freedom, benefit the construction of students motivation to learn and create as well. 3 Common Problems and the Reasons in Senior High School English Teaching3.1 Common ProblemsThe education system in our country is on the transformation from exam-oriented education to quality education. Exam-oriented education has been carried out for a long time in our country. Its disadvantages reveal gradually and bring about some problems.The first one is that under the guides of the national examination, overlooking the training of listening and speaking happens usually in senior high school English teaching. Even thought they know a whole set of grammar from the class, their English are all mute and deaf. Under the requirements of The Middle School English Syllabus, teacher should cultivate students ability on communication. So this problem is obvious.The second one is that dealing to the single educational method, senior high school students know little about the English culture. Since one language represents it culture, knowing the culture well plays important role in learning the language well. In this sense, being lack of realizing the culture will have negative effect on good mast of one language.Third, though the senior high school text book has been reformed several times and is added interesting information to it, the English class takes the traditional grammar teaching as the most important part. It happens usually that learning grammar for learning grammar, which makes the whole class boring, students are not interesting to the learning content and teachers will spend lots of effort to teach while the result appears not so good.3.2 Causes to the ProblemsOf course examination-oriented education system is the direct cause to these problems. It stresses high scores in examination and neglects the necessity to impart the English culture and the basis to learn a language. Also, the only aim to earn a higher score makes students lack of interesting and motivation to learn English.Grammar-translation method is a way to teaching English through explaining the grammar in detail at first, then using the knowledge of grammar in English-Chinese translation. It is widely employed in senior high school English teaching and the leading particulars are taking grammar as the essentials and translation as the common method, focusing on reading and writing and reciting rules of grammar and new words, but neglecting listening and speaking. In the positive side, students could lay good foundation of grammar and have decent ability on reading and writing by English. In the other side, English is a kind of language, the aim to learn it is can use it well in usual life. Ignoring listening and speaking is the part of grammar-translation method which is needed to improve.4 Functions of Using Original English MoviesBefore we talk about how to combine original English movie to the senior high English teaching, we should know clearly the functions of this new method. 4.1 MotivationFirst it provides motivating materials to both students and teachers (刘文娟, 2006b). Motivation is a key factor in English learning. If a class is lack of motivation, no matter how much effort teacher puts into it, the result is often fruitless. An original movie can be very motivating and interesting if it describes real-life situations, real-life people and real-life language. During the learning process, if we employ films as the teaching material, language learning will become enjoyable. The materials that films provide are both audio and visual, which help students learn English more easily. Thats because while students are watching a film, students not only listen to the characters speech but also watch their movements, beautiful heroines and handsome heroes, appreciate beautiful scenery and listen to pleasant songs and fluent dialogues. These can really motivate students initiative and enable them to learn in a relaxing and cheerful atmosphere. Hence, it is reasonable to say the original movie has the power to create some kind of English unique study atmosphere for the student. 4.2 Promotion of Listening and Speaking SkillsSecond, it can promote students listening and speaking skills. For most English learners, they lack the environment of speaking English (Kramsch, 1994), so do the senior high school students, especially for the students who live in schools dormitories. So in most cases, they always speak English in their own ways and dont consider whether its accurate or not. As time goes by, they get used to expressing Chinese English, which is full of mistakes and feels so strange to foreigners. On one hand, they are also amused in some sentences. Because the language in a book they usually learn has been polished again and again by the writer, and even the communication in it is polished. Though the text books are amended in recent years, they still cannot provide the students language environment and present perfect thinking system of the native English speakers. Movie shows real-life situations in which characters speak their own language. When watching it, students will try to understand and think about English because they are attracted by the story in the movie. Thus, original movie becomes one of the effective ways to solve the problem. 4.3 Enlarge the Knowledge about CultureAddition to them, original movie also can enlarge students knowledge about the culture of English-speaking countries. It is known that it is impossible to learn a language well without knowing its culture (Kramsch, 1994). Thus, in the course of language teaching, culture teaching should be an inevitable and essential process However, lack of transmission of culture is general in senior high school English learning. The original English movie which definitely contains its culture can provide the cultural sense for students. In this sense, it is also right to use movie to solve this problem.
