(3分)阅读理解 Alsten Chase has written a book about Yellowstone National Park. He is worried about the damage the fires can do to the park. He is also concerned(关心) about the park rules. These rules say that nature should decide what happens to the park. Alsten also writes that the elk herd(马鹿群) has grown too big. The elks walk on the riverbanks. They eat the new grass and roots of baby trees. The beavers(河狸) need the trees to build dams(坝).The dams raise the water levels. Higher water levels put more water into the soil. Wet soil helps plants grow faster. The plants offer homes and food to other animals.Chase thinks that the park rules would work only in a park with natural settings. He believes that Yellowstone has had an artificial(人为的) setting for a long time. The native people left. The wolves were taken away and other animals were removed. The areas of land were fenced off(隔开) and other animals added. He thinks the park rules that let herds grow too big and the fires are hurting the nature of the park. The park manager thinks the rules are good and that the park will be fine. The space suit Armstrong wore on his lunar mission has come to symbolize courage and human achievement. In 1971, the Smithsonians National Air and Space Museum(NASM), in Washington, D.C., acquired (获得) Armstrongs suit. It stood proudly on display for visitors to admire, until there were changes in the suits appearance. Over time, the suit started to show signs of deterioration, Lisa Young said. Young is an objects conservator (文物修复员) at NASM. It is her job to preserve(维护)historical and cultural objects.Plastics are tricky to conserve, Young says. They tend to degrade (降解)over time. Neoprene is one type of plastic in Armstrongs suit. The material can turn brittle and break into tiny pieces. This would ruin the space suit. NASM, seeking ways to preserve this historical treasure, removed it from display in 2006.What causes plastic to degrade in the first place? Many things, Odile Madden says. Madden is a scientist in California. She explains that sunlight, water, humidity, and dust can cause plastics to degrade. Some plastics will break down no matter what we do, Madden says.Yet history can still be saved. Scientists have found that storing plastics in cooler temperatures, with lower humidity levels, can slow degradation. Young says Armstrongs suit is currently in storage at a temperature of 63F and a lower relative humidity of 30%. These conditions will be maintained when Armstrongs suit returns to a museum display case in time for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.Plastic degradation affects art, too. Artist Claes Oldenburg created False Food Selection in 1966.It consists of plastic food displayed in a wooden box. The plastic food used to look real. Now, some of it has flattened and yellowed. Georgina Rayner is a conservation scientist at Harvard Art Museums, in Cambridge. She says the artworks wooden box produces an acidic (酸的) gas that eats away at the plastic. This speeds up the degradation process. But Rayner is motivated to conserve this artwork and others like it. Plastics are a part of our history, she says. Its important to preserve them so that future generations can understand the journey weve taken.(1)Neil Armstrongs space suit . A . is in storage at a higher relative humidityB . is considered as a symbol of plastic artC . was protected at Harvard Art MuseumsD . was removed from display in 2006(2)The word deterioration in Paragraph 1 probably means . Owning a bicycle was a big deal to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and down the footpath, and at the front of the house. We also rode together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending any money.Bradley had discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard in Campbelltown, South Australia, when he and his sister went outside for a morning ride. He couldnt believe that someone would do this.He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope with the magical words, Buy yourself a new bicycle. There was a $100 banknote inside. We were very touched that someone had the heart to do this, Weve never been able to thank the person but we suspect(猜想) that it may have been one of our wonderful neighbors.
