I was also five years younger than one of my brothers and seven years younger than the other. As a result I often felt left out when their friends came over to play. I was either too small or too young for whatever they were doing and they didnt want their younger brother listening to their conversations either. More often than not I found myself outside playing alone and feeling forgotten. I remember one spring afternoon feeling especially lonely as I sat in the yard behind our house. We lived miles from town and I hardly saw my own friends outside of school. I heard my brothers laughing from inside the house and felt a single tear coming down my cheek. At that moment I saw a large brown dog walking over to me. He looked happy and his tail was wagging(摇摆) as well. Even though he didnt know me he greeted me like a long lost friend, licking(舔) my chin and sitting beside me on the spring grass. It must have been at least an hour that I patted and talked to this four-legged angel. He let me pour out all my troubles and share my deepest thoughts before he kissed my cheek goodbye and ambled(缓行步态) off either to Heaven or his home. I went back inside feeling happy, knowing that no matter what life may hold I was loved. Now over 40 years later I still remember that angel with a smile.I believe that God sent him at that moment of sadness to remind me just how much he loved me. There is nothing more important than knowing we are loved. When we are loved, we will learn to love others. Learning to love helps us to understand ourselves and other people better.21. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.Sports 1: Basketball We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park . To cover the cost of hiring a bus, each student will have to pay 10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.Sports 2: Gym We will be using St.Peters Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing their park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.Sports 3: Hiking Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost 75/hr.Sports 4: Swimming The Kowloon City Aqueatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from thepoolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm). Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. The purpose of the memo is to_.A. attract students interest in the program B. require the parents to select a sport for their childC. help the staff explain the program to the parentsD. remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on timeCSince the Internet came into homes, the daily life has never been the same again. But the thing that worries most of us is that we can get viruses from the Internet. But can we catch viruses on our cell phones? A new study in the journal Science says yes, but the spread of such mobile software that can bring harm to our cell phones wont reach dangerous levels until more cell phones are on the same operating system.Computers are easily attacked by viruses because they share data, especially over the Internet. Of course, nowadays, more people are using their cell phones more and more frequently. They use them for emailing, text messaging and downloading troublesome ring tones(手机铃声), etc. So it is obvious that cell phone viruses are a threat as well.Scientists used nameless call data from more than six million cell phone users to help model a possible outbreak. And they concluded that viruses that spread from phone to phone by Bluetooth are not much concerned, because users have to be in close physical relation for their phones to “see” one another. However, viruses that spread through multimedia messaging services(多媒体短信业务) can move much faster, because they can come in disguise(伪装), such as a cool tune sent by a friend. The good news is that to be effective, these viruses need their victims(受害人) to all use the same operating system, which not enough of us do. Because there is no Microsoft operating system for mobile phones, yet. Thank goodness.28. What is the passage mainly about?A. The operating system of cell phones.B. The threat of cell phone viruses.C. The wide use of cell phones. D. Computer viruses.29. When _, cell phone viruses can be dangerous.A. all the cell phones work on the same operating systemB.Microsoft operating system for cell phones is createdC. users can see each other on the phones D.Bluetooth is widely used30. What can we infer about Bluetooth according to the scientists?A. It can increase the chances of cell phone viruses greatly. B. It can help us to stop the spreading of cell phone viruses.C.It wont possibly cause the outbreak of cell phone viruses.D. It can make users have close physical relation with one another.31. We can learn from the passage that _.A. it is impossible to catch viruses on our cell phones B. cell phones are not well connected with the InternetC. it is dangerous for people to download ring tones to cell phonesD. more than one operating system is used for cell phones nowDThe airline lost your baggage. The hotel laundry ruined your favorite shirt. The taxi driver asked for more money. When youre abroad, sometimes things go wrong. Now you can do something about it! Use these tips when you want to express an effective complaint in English. No matter how unfair the situation is, its best to express your complaint politely. In English, youll sound more polite if you use indirect language. Here are some examples:“Im sorry to bother you.” Starting a complaint like this puts the listener who may have heard many complaints that day at ease. Use this phrase if the situation isnt that serious. For example, “Im sorry to bother you, but I wanted a baked potato, not fried.”“Can you help me with this?” Everyone would rather be asked to do something than told! So try expressing your complaint as a request for help: “Can you help me with this? My shirt came back from the laundry without buttons.”“Im afraid there may be a misunderstanding.” This is a polite way of saying, “Your information is wrong. Please fix it now.” Youll most likely use this phrase if you made reservations(预定) for a flight, hotel or restaurant, and when you arrive, its not what you expected. For example, “Im afraid there may be a misunderstanding. I requested a non-smoking room.”“I understand its not your fault.” Often when you make a complaint, you deal with a person who was not directly responsible for the problem. But the problem isnt your fault, either! This phrase is helpful when you need swift action. Tell the person youre dealing with that you understand theyre not at fault and then directly state the problem: “I understand its not your fault, but the airline promised they would deliver my baggage yesterday.”“Excuse me, but I understood that.” Using this phrase lets the person know youre well-informed and doubt they might be trying to take advantage of you. Dont say, “Hey! Youre trying to cheat me!” Instead, start indirectly by stating what you know to be true: “I understood that the taxi ride to the airport was only 25 dollars.” Then give them a chance to do the right thing.32. Whats the purpose of this passage?A. To give an introduction of life abroad.B. To offer advice on giving complaints in English.C. To give suggestions on how to learn English.D. To offer guides to those who travel around the world.33. According to the passage, if we meet an unfair situation, wed better _.A. use direct language to make others understand B. go for the police immediately C. state our complaints politelyD. fight against the one who is responsible34. Why should we start a complaint with polite phrases?A. Because the situation is never serious.B. Because the listener may not speak English.C. Because we should be always in good manners abroad.D. Because it can help solve the problem more easily.35. Several effective complaints in English are mentioned above EXCEPT _.A. “Can you help me with this?”B. “I understand its not your fault.”C. “Im afraid there may be a misunderstanding.”D. “Hey!
