In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of extinction than birds or animals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past 500 years 4.5 percent of languages have died outcompared with 1.3 percent of birds, and 1.9 percent of mammals.Languages come and go, and thousands have done exactly that without leaving any trace(痕迹). Only a very fewBasque, Greek and Latin among themhave lasted more than 2000 years. But it seems that the pace of their disappearance is becoming quicker. The Ethnologue, a database of all the languages spoken in the world, states that 417 languages are spoken by so few people that they are in the final stages of becoming extinct. If very few people speak a language, it will probably die out.Languages may be lost through migration, as people move from small towns to city centers, or when environments are destroyed by the search for oil or wood. Natural disasters can also devastate populations, and along with them, their language. Governments also play a role in the extinction of languages. The need to establish “official languages”, for a country to educate its children and carry out its business, had a disastrous effect on many small languages. What is lost if a language is lost? Some people argue that languages die as the human race develops. Obviously there could be great benefits if everyone in the world spoke the same languagesome industries already reflect this, with English essential for pilots and air traffic controllers. But there are more important things than convenience. As languages are lost, whole ways of life and knowledge may be lost along with them.To put it simply, language expresses something about who we are, about where we live in the world. Ani Rauhihi, a Maori teacher in New Zealands North Island, sums it up: “If you grow up speaking our language, you wont know who you are.”8. What do the figures mentioned in the first paragraph suggest?A. Most languages have died out completely.B. Languages are in great danger of extinction.C. Languages are disappearing slower than before.D. Animals are disappearing faster than languages.9. What can best replace the underlined word “devastate” ?A. raiseB. controlC. improveD. destroy10. What if a language is lost according to the passage?A. There will be great trouble.B. There is no need to worry about it.C. Its culture and knowledge will also be lost.D. People will be able to communicate with others conveniently.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Languages reflect our identity.B. People will speak the same language one day.C. Ani Rauhihi cares less about languages dying out.D. Fewer people will remember their own languages.【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. It follows a similar official statement in France and some after the British government was ordered by the High Court to develop new plans to reduce NO2 in the air. Judges ruled that previous clean-air plans were not enough to meet European Union pollution limits in the coming years.Britains government has said the poor air quality has an unnecessary and avoidable negative effect on citizens health, and costs up to $ 3.5 billion in annual lost productivity.Part of the new plan involves an offer of $260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions(排放) are over EU standards. Ideas so far include changing road layouts, reprogramming traffic lights and charging a fee for the oldest and most polluting cars on the road. The plan also includes $1.3 billion for government purchase of extreme-low-emission vehicles, nearly $130 million to improve infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations and $378 million for remodeling existing vehicles.Climate change is also a reason for the plan to get these vehicles off the road. “We cant carry on with petrol and diesel cars,” Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. “Its important we all prepare for a significant change which deals not just with the problems of health caused by emissions, but the broader problems caused in terms of accelerating climate change.”Gove added that local communities are partly responsible for coming up with ways to limit emissions, including possible limitations on commuters(上下班往返者) and the addition of cleaner mass transportation options. Local leaders are called on to draw up “appropriate plans” to deal with climate challenges related to emission, he said.12. Why does the British government decide on this ban?A. To focus on its citizens health.B. To follow in Frances footsteps.C. To respond to the courts request.D. To promote solar energy in transport.13. Which measure may the British government take to achieve its plan?A. Limiting the number of traffic lights.B. Removing old and high-emission vehicles.C. Spending some money on electric vehicles.D. Changing the way in which roads are arranged.14. What can be inferred from Goves words?A. United efforts are required to achieve the plan.B. Convenient public transportation is badly needed.C. Vehicle emissions are the key factor in climate change.D. Petrol and diesel cars may hold back economic progress.15. What is the suitable title for this passage?A. Practical ways to reduce vehicle emissionsB. The EU forces Britain to improve the poor air qualityC. Britain plans to take petrol and diesel engines off roadsD. Relationship between vehicle emissions and climate change【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15.
