It would be a bit adventurous (冒险的) to set off from Oxford University to go to London Bridge if there wasnt a map of the London Underground at each station. In fact, a lot of the early map-makers were adventurers and explorers, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. So what did people do before there were maps? Well, it was quite easy to use natural signs like mountains and rivers if you were travelling on foot or riding a horse. People took small boats down rivers and followed coastlines. And it was much more logical (合理的) to use time, not distance, to measure (计量) journeys: the next village is a three-hour ride, for example. In fact, in the earliest maps, people didnt draw landmarks. They drew the stars. It was very easy to see the night sky and use it for navigation (航行). The sky was a lot clearer before the light pollution from cities that we have today. When towns and cities were built, people drew road maps which gave correct distances and directions. The London Underground was opened in 1863 and it also used a road map style. But a man called Henry Beck realized that travelling by train wasnt the same as driving your car across London. Passengers only needed to know which stations to change at. His new design (设计) for the Underground map wasnt very popular with the train companies at first. But the passengers loved it and in 1933, 700,000 copies were printed. These days, of course, you can ride a bike, drive a car or go through a forest and know where you are exactly, using a GPS. Its really difficult to get lost!26 . What was drawn in the earliest maps?AStars.BLandmarks.CCities and towns,DMountains and rivers.27 . Is advertisement really necessary? Billions of dollars are spent on it every year, so it must be important. After all, its a busy world. You have to advertise to get peoples attention to sell products! Not every company thinks that way, however. The NO-AD company doesnt advertise in traditional ways. It sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their products cheaper for customers.“Word-of-mouth advertising” happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague (同事). And so a chain of information is created.Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like “Studies show that our product is the best,” or “Everyone loves this product,” it can sound unconvincing. Its much more believable to hear about a product from a family member or friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones opinions are very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. Its cost-effective (after all, its free) and a company doesnt have to create a complex business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about word-of-mouth advertising. Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry business cards. Only say good things about your company. Dont say bad things about your competition. Help other companies by recommending people to them. The more you help others, the more good luck will come back to you and thats good business.30 . Whats the “traditional way” of advertising?AAttracting people with lower price.BSelling products by word of mouth.CTelling people the names of the companies.DSpending billions of dollars on advertisements.31 . Which of the following may be a word-of-mouth advertising?ATelling people how good the product is on TV.BRecommending the product you like to your friends.CTelling people the product is the best in the newspaper.DShowing people how popular the product is on the Internet.32 . But he was out of luck this summer. He went to an old temple (庙) on a high mountain by himself. On his way there it suddenly began to rain heavily and he hurried to go down the mountain. When he got to the foot of the mountain, he found the wooden bridge was under the water, so he had to spend the rainy night in a broken farmhouse. He was so hungry that he hardly fell asleep. The next morning the rain stopped and he found the bridge was damaged. He saw the river was not too deep and tried to swim across it. In the middle of the river the water nearly washed him away. Luckily, two farmers saved him, but he lost his bag. They gave him some food and dry clothes. He thanked them and went to the nearest town to call up his parents. At the end of the street, Dick found a small hotel and went in. He asked the price for a single room.“A room on the first floor is twenty dollars, on the second floor, fifteen dollars and on the third, ten dollars,” answered the owner. The young man had only eight dollars in all his pockets.
