So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies. It has long been known that meat or fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing; in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans, and in fact many people have explored this possibility. However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals, which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also form sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells. In the 1940s Dr B. J. Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them.Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin, a clear thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen.Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperature. Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured.(1) It seems that the idea of preserving human bodies . A . is impracticalB . comes from that of storing meat and fruit fresh by freezingC . is quite funnyD . doesnt make any sense(2) From the fact that most living things existing under warm conditions die when frozen, the scientists realize that . A . living things cannot be frozen actuallyB . it is impossible for them to freeze human beingsC . the water from the living cells should be removedD . cells cannot recover when they are carefully unfrozen(3) Glycerin can be used . A . to remove water from living cellsB . to unfreeze living cellsC . to freeze living cellsD . to change the shape of crystals(4) What is the passage mainly about? A . Some of the most basic challenges, - however, -are not having clean water and toiletries (卫生用品)-a big problem for homeless teens. That encouraged a young researcher to invent a multi-purpose product to help these teens.I was born into a life of volunteering, said 13-year-old Leia Gluckman. And thats true. Her mom is a president of an organization providing help for homeless teens. Leia and her brother have volunteered there for years. When she was a young girl, Leia helped serve food where teens were eating. Now shes a teenager herself, and shes managing the toiletry and clothing work there. From her work at the center, Leia noticed that teens asked for some toiletries more than others. What they needed most often were toothpaste, body powder (粉)and shampoo(洗发水).Leia wondered whether she could create a product to serve all three purposes. It would need to take away dirt and oil from skin and hair. It would need to clean teeth. Also, it would need to kill bacteria (病菌)without being harmful to people. She wanted her ingredients (产品成分)to be natural, to be able to break down easily and to taste and smell pleasant. Moreover, this product had to be lowcost and have a long shelf life.Leia started by going to stores and looking at the ingredient lists for toiletries. Then she tried eight different ways. She tested each way to see how well it worked. Not all of them worked well. But she finally decided on three. Each includes salt and baking powder. Salt helps clean teeth and skin; baking powder helps take in bad smells. She also has some other recipes which include some special materials that give her products different tastes and smells, which would let teens choose a product based on personal preferences. It wasnt easy, but Leia came up with some model products. She presented them at the finals of Broadcom MASTERS science competition.Leia wants to develop her products further. Could it possibly be used to drive away mosquitoes (蚊子)? she wonders.Science offers a way to go about solving problems and helping people, says Leia. And she thinks her products could benefit a great number of people, not just the homeless. Anyone in an area with little or no chance to get clean water could find her products useful, maybe refugees (难民) and soldiers who are sent to places without running water.(1) What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? A . Leia has lived a life of volunteering for years.B . Leia and her brother helped their mom for years.C . Leia was born in a great family of volunteering.D . Leias mom set up an organization for homeless teens.(2) Leias products meet homeless peoples needs mostly because . A . they are cheap and naturalB . they can offer personal choicesC . they are used to drive away mosquitoesD . they can serve three purposes with little water(3) According to the passage, we know that . A . Leia invented the product in order to win the MASTERS competitionB . Leias invention came from her will to create and to help othersC . The family influence played a decisive role in Leias inventionD . Leia believed that science could help solve problems easily21. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in summer. However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source(资源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldnt need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldnt need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we dont recycle much of the plastic we use. In 2006, Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas. So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isnt a recycling bin near you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference. (1) What is not mentioned about bottled water in this passage? A . Its healthy.B . Its clean.C . Its easy.D . Its expensive.(2) Plastic products are made from _. A . energyB . oilC . rubbishD . plants(3) About_ of plastic waste became rubbish in Greece in 2006. A . 10%B . 50%C . 80%D . 90%(4) Whi
