In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The Adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be

Most people regard snake bites as fatal misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be
3、 more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth, so it follows that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the Adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and ar
4、e far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The Adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely, ff it hears you coming, it will normally get
5、 out Of the way as quickly as it can, but Adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is
6、 likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison. Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as
7、 many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness. 1. How did it happen? By the late 1800s more and more people were visiting Stonehenge for a day out. Now a W
12、orld Heritage Site owned by the Crown, it was, at the time, privately owned and neglected. But the visitors left behind rubbish and leftover food. It encouraged rats that made holes at the stones foundations, weakening them. One of the upright stones had already fallen over and one had broken in two
13、. They also chipped pieces off the stones for souvenirs and carved pictures into them, says architectural critic Jonathan Glancey. It was the same for other pre-historic remains, which were disappearing fast. Threats also included farmers and landowners as the ancient stones got in the way of workin
14、g on the fields and were a free source of building materials. Shocked and angry, Lubbock took up the fight. When he heard Britains largest ancient stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire was up for sale in 1871 he persuaded its owners to sell it to him and the stone circle was saved. Lubbock aroused na
15、tional attention for ancient monuments, says Glancey. At the time places like Stonehenge were just seen as a collection of stones, ancient sites to get building materials. Lubbock knew they were the roots of British identity. He did for heritage what Darwin did for natural history. But Lubbock could
16、nt buy every threatened site. He knew laws were needed and tabled the Ancient Monuments Bill. It proposed government powers to take any pre-historic site under threat away from uncaring owners, a radical idea at the time. For eight years he tried and failed to get the bill through parliament. Finall
17、y, in 1882, it was voted into law. It had, however, been watered down; people had to willingly give their ancient monuments to the government. But what it did do was plant the idea that the state could preserve Britains heritage better than private owners. Pressure started to be put on the owners of

28、day please give me good old English food. Gabby Macadam: On the whole I enjoy foreign food, but having said that I can think of dozens of foreign dishes which I simply cant stand. You see, they have fish in some way or other and I never eat fish in any form. I have found that many foreign dishes are
29、 served with a kind of sauce. I think it is the accompanying sauce that hides all sorts of problems. I am not so sure that I would be as fond of them as I am if they were served without the sauce. Len Dangerfield: When we English people travel abroad, we always make a great fuss about studying the m
30、enu but always end up with steak. You see, when Im abroad I always miss our home cooking. I mean, Im used to English food. Sometimes I do go to restaurant to taste some exotic dishes, but most of the time I still prefer to have English food. You know, its always difficult to get used to food in othe
31、r countries. Peter Hawke: I like foreign food. I particularly like Indian food. Well, Im married to an Indian girl. She is a good cook. Im lucky to have her cook for me every day. I think Indian food as well as other foreign foods is generally tastier and more spicy than English food. Traditional En
32、glish dishes, like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and fish and chips, are quite well-known abroad. But I must say as a nation we are not particularly good at catering. As far as Im concerned, I think we should learn to cook more interesting dishes and make our food tastier and more varied. Now mat
