3、omplicated history, witnessing many ups and downs of powers and dynasties. For more than 2,000 years the wall served as a powerful means of protection while nowadays it is described more as a symbol of wisdom and diligence of the ancient Chinese people than as an actual wall of fortification (防御工事).

4、 It's generally believed that the first parts of the Great Wall were built during the Spring and Autumn Period, when the eastern and central regions of China consisted of many small states. To protect their states from unwanted invaders, the princes (诸侯王) ordered separate walls to be built along

5、 state borders. This practice continued until the Qin Dynasty, when the Great Wall as we know it now began to take shape.Intending to prevent his newly established state from attacks by the Xiongnu people, Qin Shi Huang ordered that a number of existing walls constructed previously along the norther

6、n border be joined into a single system. Construction of what we refer to as “Wan Li Chang Cheng” was one of the most ambitious building projects ever undertaken by any civilization. The famous Chinese general Meng Tian initially directed the project, and was said to have used a massive army of sold

7、iers, criminals and commoners as workers. It is also said that many people died while building the wall out of fatigue or starvation.However, little of the Qin Wall remains. Actually, the majority of the best-preserved walls date from the Ming dynasty. Unlike the earlier fortifications, the Ming con

8、struction was stronger owing to the use of bricks and stone rather than rammed earth (夯土). In the Ming era, as China flourished, the Great Wall was systematically maintained and strengthened to prevent further invasion from Mongolians, ruling class of the former Yuan Dynasty. The Ming wall extended

9、from Liaoning Province over 8, 000 kilometers west into Gansu Province, and wound its way throughout the North China like a dragon of earth and stone. After centuries of weathering, many sections of the Great Wall have collapsed or even completely disappeared without a trace, depending on when they

10、were built. But Chinese and international organizations are struggling to preserve this unique treasure of incomparable historical value. The significance of the Great Wall is beyond words. Between the 18th and 20th centuries, the Great Wall was regarded as a physical manifestation (实体的表现) of Chines
