Having authored several astrophysics (天体物理学) nonfiction books over the years, Arcand recently turned he

20、r attention to childrens books. She released Goodnight Exomoon last year, an “astronomical parody (天文的模仿作品), ”which takes the classic childrens book Goodnight Moon and explores planetary science in a way that is readable for the very young. The idea, Arcand says, was born when her own children refus

21、ed to sleep. “I would read for hours to try to get them to go to sleep and they loved Goodnight Moon. One day I could not imagine reading Goodnight Moon again so I started creating stories based on it, ” says Arcand. She wrote down one of the versions of her playful parody, and then put it in a draw

22、er where it stayed for nearly a decade. Then, in 2018, scientists found what they believed was the first exomoon (系外卫星) orbiting the exoplanet known as Kepler-1625b. “With that first exomoon candidate, it reminded me that I had written the story, ” says Arcand. So, the scientist pulled her would-be

23、book out of the drawer and brought it to life. “In the great telescope room there was a telephone, an atmospheric balloon, and a picture of a satellite flying by the moon ” begins the story, setting readers in a room that houses a huge telescope. The story goes on to introduce children to some of th

24、e more modern tools that astronomers use, like accelerometers, micrometers and satellites, teaching them about astronomical objects like comets and exomoons. Arcand hopes the book will excite “ce fans”, and that it will inspire children and especially young girls to see the field of science as one t

In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadnt interacted with rec

41、ently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that theyd feel more connected when interacting via (通过) the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted

42、that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said theyd rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based meth

43、ods for communicating. In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than o

44、ver e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.
