1、BOOK 8 Module 6 The Power of Poetry -by Luo YulianTeaching background:Class: Class4, Grade 3 from No. 49 Middle School.In this module, we talk about both Chinese poems and English poems. Students have been learning Chinese poems for years, and they have also learned 4 English poems in Module 3, Book

2、6, which will make it easier for them to talk about the power of poetry. Compared with Chinese poems, English poems are very direct in meaning, and are easier to understand, so reading poems wont be a problem. Whats hard for them is to write an English poem because they have never tried and dont bel

3、ieve they can compose one. But with the help of fun English poem videos and the detailed explanation from the teacher, the students will find its so much fun and so easy to write English poems.Teaching objectives:Objectives of language: Ss will learn some new words: therapy/channel/daffodil/flutter/

4、breeze, etc.Ss will learn to recognize rhymes and compose rhymes in this class.Objective of ability:Ss will be able to enhance their reading skills and writing ability. Objectives concerning attitude, emotion and value :Ss learn to appreciate English poems.Ss learn to recognize the power of poetry.T

5、eaching contents:BOOK 8 Module 6 Reading and Writing The Power of PoetryTeaching focus:1. Ss learn the power of poetry. 2. Ss learn to appreciate English poems.3. Ss learn to compose English poems.Teaching difficulties:Students limited vocabulary might make it difficult for them to find some good rh

6、yming words to end each line of a poem.Students poor spoken English might be an obstacle when talking about the features of poems. Teaching methods:Lecturing and communicative approach.Facilities:Multi-media, textbooks, whiteboard, marking pen, phone, etc.Teaching Procedures:Step I. Warming upDaily

7、greetings to the students. Get the students ready for class.Step II. Leading inShow a music video concerning about English poems to students, and ask:Q: “What do you think about the lyrics in the song?”2. Invite students to give their answers and give remarks.Lead students to relate their answers to

8、 poems.3. Show the lyrics on the screen, and ask students to recognize the rhymes in the poem, and then ask Q: “Whats good about using poems in a song?” Lead students to relate their answers to the use the rhymes and the function of the rhymes in a poem. Give the answer/conclusion: “Rhymes can make

9、the lyrics more rhythmic, so poetry can make a song more rhythmic.”Step III. Reading1. Before reading, ask students:“Besides the function of making a song more rhythmic, what other functions does poetry have?”2. While reading.Ask students to read the whole passage-The Power of Poetry, and underline

10、all the function sentences in the passage.3. After reading.Invite students to read out the sentences they underlined about the functions of poetry.Make a conclusion about the power the poetry:(1) serve as a way to express feelings. (2) be used to describe the beauty of things. (3) help kids to explo

11、re language and have fun with words. (4) be used as a therapy to help people. (5) help kids grow confidence, provide a channel to communicate, help kids recognize and explore their problems, and develop a positive attitude to life. (6)help to raise funds.“Since poems have so many functions, why dont

12、 we create one?Step IV. Composing poems1. Before composing(1) analyze some English poems.Poem1: I Wondered Lonely as a CloudPoem 2: In This Short Life.Ask students to analyze the two poems and ask “How many complete sentences are there in each poem?Show 4 more English poems that students have learne

13、d before, and make the conclusion: “To write an English poem, first we need to write down some sentences. But its easy to write down sentences, its hard to think of some rhyming words at the end of each line.”(2) analyze the rhymes of some poems.(3) complete activity 3 on P80, choosing the rhymes to

14、 complete the poem.(4) show two short childrens English poems, and ask students to appreciate the simple English poems.(5) make a conclusion about the procedure of creating a poem:Write down some sentencescut them down into different linesmake sure some ending words of each line rhyme.2. While compo

15、singGive 4-5 minutes for the students to compose an English poem in groups.3. After composingUse the phone to take pictures of students works and upload them to the big screen so that all the students can see the works clearly.Step V. Ending End the class by asking:Q: “Did you have fun in making you
