ingpreparedtotakeallthatyou’velearnedhereandmakeitworkintheworldaroundIbelievethatyoungpeoplearegraduatingtodayintoaworldfilledwithmorehopeandmorepromisethaninanyothertimeinourhistory.Iknowsometimesthatmightsoundstrange,becausewethinkalwaysofthedangersandchallengesintheworldaroundus.ButIhavestudiedhistoryinmylife.IdobelievethisisaneraofgreatpromiseandgreatForthoseofyouwhohaveseenourads,youknowthattheyendwiththephrase,“everythingispossible.”Acynicmightsaythatjustamarketingslogan–butIactuallybelievethat.Idon’tthinkeveryiseasy,Idon'tthinkthingshappensrightaway.ButIdothinkthateverythingispossible.Foralltheremarkableadvancementswehaveseeninrecentyears,nothinghasmatchedthepowerofinformationtechnologytochangeourworldforthebetter.Andinthenextdecade,itwilltakeustoceswecanonlyimaginetoday.istheworld’sfastest-growingeconomy;theworld’sleaderindirectforeigninvestment;oneoftheworld’slargesttradingnations--aleaderonboththeproductionandconsumptionofinformationtechnology.ispoisedtoyahugepartinthatfuture–andthestudentswhograduatefromTsinghuaUniversityarepoisedtoshapethefutureoftechnologylikeneverbefore.Nowlikeanyuniversitystudents,Iknowforyoutheroadaheadhasmuchuncertainty.ButifthereisonethingIhavelearnedinthepast20yearsinthisindustry,itisthattheprinciplethatyouhavelearnedinsidethewallsofTsinghua,theprincipleismoretrueoutsidetheuniversitythaninside.TheprincipleIamspeakingofisthis:thatgreatleaders–likegreatorganizations,greatcompanies,andgreatnations–greatleadersaredefinednotsimplybytheircapabilities,butbytheircharacter.Notjustbythetheyare,butbythetheykeep.Notbysuccessalone–butasTsinghuateaches,withself-disciplineandsocialconcerninequalbalance.Tobehonest,IwishIcouldsaythattheroadtolearningthatlessonformewaseasy.IwishIcouldlyouthatthedayIgraduatedfromuniversityIknewexactlyhowallthepieceswouldfittogether,thatIknewexactlywhatIwantedtodofromdayoneandmylifeasbeenanicestraitlineandcarefulneversince.Thetruthis,Ididn’tbeginmycareerasatechnologist.ItooktoheartthewisdomofConfucius–whotaughtusthatoneshould“studythepastifyouwoulddefinethefuture”–andImajoredinmedievalhistoryandphilosophyatStanfordUniversity.Asperhapsyoucanappreciate,thatofdegreewasnotingreatdemandwhenIgraduatedfromUniversity.SoIwasn’tsurewhattodoaftercollage,soIwenttolawschoolbecausethat’swhatmyfatherwantedmetodo.ButfoundIdidn'tlikelawschool;Ididn'thaveanypassionforit.Iquitafteronesemesterquitafterasemester,andwanderedoffintotheworldtofindmyself.Ididsomestrangethings.IjoinedacommercialbrokerageandthereItyped,Iansweredthephones–Iwaswhatwecallasecretary.ThenIwentofftoItalytoteachEnglishtoItalianbusinessmen.Then,finally,Idecidedtoapplytobusinessschool.AndthereIlearnedaboutmarketingandoperationsandstatisticsandotherskillsnecessaryforbusiness–butperhapsmoreimportantly,Ihadprofessors–likethestudentsheredo--whochallengedme,whotaughtmeadifferentnotionofwhatwaspossible,whodmetoseemylifeinnewways.AndIthink,inaverygreatmeasure--thatiswhatleadershipisabout,thatiswhateducationisabout,thatiswhatcharacterisallabout.Yousee,Ithinkoneofmostimportantqualitiesaleadercanbringistheability,theenergy,thedesiretounlockpotentialinothers.Ithinkleadershipisultimayabouthelotherpeopleachievemorethantheythinkispossible;itisabouthelpeopleseeadifferentsetofpossibilitiesforthemselves.I’vebeenaskedalotsinceifthereareanylessonsI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadership.Therearethreelessons,IthinkthatIhavelearned,thatcontinuetoinstructmetothisday,thatcontinuetoguidemeinbothbusinessandinlife.Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercountsandthat.Thefirstlessonisthatvaluesmatterandcharactercounts,andthatnomatterhowmuchthingschange,fundamentalvaluesshouldn't.Forthoseofyouwhoarejuststartingoutyourcareer,youwillfindthatinleadership—asperhapsinlife—themostimportantdecisionsyoumake,andthetoughestdecisionsyoumakeareoftenthedecisionsyoumakeAndwhenyoumakethosedecisions,thereisanopportunitytobebuffetedaboutbyandconfusedbyallkindsofthings:conventionalwisdom,andpopularemotion…andmaybebycynicismanddoubtaswell.IthinkleadershiptakeswhatIwouldcallastronginternalcompass.AndIusethetermcompassbecausewhatdoesacompassdo?Whenthewindsarehowling,andthestormsraging,andtheskyissocloudythatyouhavenothingtonavigateby,acompasslsyouwheretrueNorthis.AndIthinkwhenaisinadifficultsituation,alonelysituation;youhavetorelyonthatcompass.WhoamI?WhatdoIbelieve?DoIbelieveIamngtherightthingsfortherightreasonsinthebestwayIcan?Sometimesthat’sallyouhave.ThesecondlessonI’velearnedaboutcharacterandleadershipisthatleadership,justlikesuccess,isnotajourney,itisadestination.Itisperhapsaclichétosaythatleadershipisajourneynotadestinationbutitisaclichébecauseitistrue,leadershipisajourney.Theonlyconstantinanyofourlives,whetheryou'rerunningaorrunningafamily,orperhapsrunningacountry,ischange.Butchangehasneverbeenasconstantandasfastasitistoday.Tome,thedividinglinebetweenwillincreasinglyseparatethewinnersfromthelosersinthemarketcethoseindividuals,thedividinglinebetweenthoseindividualswhotrulymakeadifferenceandacontributioninthe21stcenturyfromthosewhodonot—isthelinebetweenthosewhoembracechangeandthosewhorunawayfromit.Itwillbebetweenthosewhoseektoleadchange,andthosewhofindrefugeinthestatusquoorintheircomfortzones.Asleaders,youcanneverforgetthatpeoplewanttodoagoodjob.Theywanttobetreatedwithconsiderationandrespect.Theywanttofeelarealsenseof plishmentintheirwork,tohavetheirideasconsidered,andtheirachievementsrecognized.Peoplewanttofeellikethey’repartofsomethinglargerthanthemselves–tobeapartofthelargervision,direction,tobepartofworthygoals.ally,Ithinkanyonecanleadfromanywhereatanytime.Ithinkleadershiphasnothingtodowithhowmanypeopleworkforyouorhowlargeyourorganizationis,orwhatyourtitleis,orhowlargeyourbudgetis.Anyonecanleadfromanywhereatanytime,whichistosaythatIbelievethatcharacterandleadershipisachoice,andareaboutmakingapositiveimpact.Andanyonecanmakeapositiveimpact.Someactsofleadershipareverylarge,andhappenonagrandscale,andsomeactsofleadershiparequitesmall.Butlikeastoneyoudropinaponditripples.Sometimesevenverysmallactsofleadershipcanhaveabigconsequences.Andofcourse,itfollowsthatifanyonecanchoosetoleadatanywherefromanytime,thenitistheroleofleaderstofindleadersotherleadersandtounlockforthemthepossibilitythattheycanmakeapositiveimpact.SothosethingsarewhatIthinkcharacterisallabout–butwhataboutcapability?Fortheprofessionthatmanyofyouhavechosen–fortheprofessionofcommunicationandinformationtechnology,asscientistsorengineers–theheartofcapability,thetruepotentialofthisfieldalsoliesinfindingthepotentialunlockedinsidethings,whethertheyareorganizations,orsocieties,machines–orpeople.Ithinkthetechnologylandscapetodayischanginginthreefundamentalways.Thefirstbigshiftweseegoingonintechnologyisthatallprocesses,andthatallcontentarebeingtransformedfromphysicalandogtodigitaland,andvirtual.TherearesomanyJustthinkaboutthesimpleexampleofwhatishappeninginphotography.Photographyisgoingfromphysicaltodigitalandnowfromdigitaltoandallthecontentisaboutto evirtualandavailable,andaccessibletoanyone,anywhereinanyformtheywant.Andthattransformationfromphysicaltodigital,virtual,willhappentoeveryprocess,everyindustry,andeverykindofcontent.Thesecondbigshiftweseeintechnologyisthatthedemandforsimplicity,formanageability,foradaptability.Whileitistruethatwhiletechnologyiscoretoeverything,itisalsotruethattechnologyisalsostilltoocomplex,toohardtomanage,andoftenthatcomplexityisabarrier.Thethirdbigshiftisthat ingahorizontal,connectedworld.Whetheryou’reaCEOtryingto
