Whenheaskedhertoexplain,shetoldhimshewasgettingastrongmessagefrommy

husband'sgrandfather,whomweallcalledGrandpaMac.Hehadpassedawayafewyearsearlier,

andwemissedhimdearly.ShesaidthatquitepossiblyGrandpaMacwasholdingthespiritofa

childforusinheaven,andthathewouldsendusthisbaby'sspiritwhenhefeltwewereready.

Mostlybecauseweneededtolaughsowewouldn'tcryinthosedays,wejokedonandoff

aboutthisrevelation.

Firstofall,weweren'tsurewebelievedinthissortofthing.AGreaterPower-maybe.But

anythingelsewasastretch.

Secondly,GrandpaMachadbeenanall-outjokester.Hewasthekindofmanwhowould

giveyouanemptyboxtoopen,watchforyourdisappointment,andthenleadyououtsidetosee

thenewcarhe'dboughtyou.

Frankly,itwouldhavebeenjustlikehimtoteaseusunmercifully—toknowthatwewanted

Weevenlaughed(alittlebit)whenourexpensivefertilitytreatmentscontinuedtofail.We'd

Eventually,webegantomoveonandlookedintodomesticadoption.Itwasatoughdecision

inmanyways,andIthinkwegrewupalotasweweighedthedecision.Aftermuchdiscussion,

weknewwewantedtosharethelifewe'dbuilttogetherwithachildwhoneededalovinghome.It

allmadesense,anditwassoalignedwithourvaluesthatweweresurprisedwehadn'tlandedon

thisoptionmuchsooner.

Duringtheperiodofwaitingforourbirthmothermatch,attendingadoptionclasses,
