Hispanicsarethecountry'ssecond-largestracialgroup,behindwhitenon-Hispanicsaccordingtothelatest2023census(普查).Hispanicsnowaccountfor18.7percentoftheU.S.population,up2.4percentinthepreviousdecadewith62.1millionHispanicslivingacrossAmericawithbigconcentrationsinNewYork,California,TexasandFlorida.
HispanicHeritageMonthfirststartedasaweekwhenitwassignedintolawbyPresidentLyndonB.Johnsonin1968.AccordingtoCongressionalhistory,theweekwascreatedtobringattentionandawarenessto“Hispanic-AmericancontributionstotheUnitedStates”,alongwithnetworkingopportunitiesfor“grassrootsandcivilrightsactivistsinsideandoutsidetheHispanic-Americancommunity”.
Almost20yearslater,RepresentativeEstebanTorresofCalifornia,aproudMexican-American,gaveabilltoexpanditintoHispanicHeritageMonthsayingsupportersofthebill“wanttheAmericanpeopletolearnofourheritage.Wewantthepublictoknowthatwesharealegacy(遗产)withtherestofthecountry,alegacythatincludesartists,writers,Olympicchampions,andleadersinbusiness,government,cinema,andscience".Thatbilldidn'tpass,butSenatorPaulSimonofIllinoisgaveasimilarbillthatPresidentRonaldReagansignedintolawafterthatin1988creatingnowwhatHispanicHeritageMonthis.

Jandrisevitswentaboutchangingthat.Shemadeadollbyhand,whichlookedlikeherfriend'schildandsentitoff.Afterthefriendpostedaphotoofthehappychildanddollon-line,anotherwomanaskedJandrisevitstomakeadollthatlookedlikeherbaby,whohadlostaleg.
Wordspread,andsoonJandrisevitsmadedollsforchildrenwithdifferentphysicaldefects(缺陷)—inshort,dollsthatlookedlikethem.Shequitherjobandstartedanonprofit,ADollLikeMe.WorkingoutofherhomeinMilwaukee,basedonphotossentbykids'parentsorcaregivers,Jandrisevitstakesaboutsevenhourstomakeeachdoll.AGoFundMepagehelpshermakeupforcostsandallowshertodonateherservices.Shehasn'tchargedforadollsinceshebeganhernonprofit.
