InstitutioninMassachusetts,placedsamplesoftheMacondooil

fromtheDeepwaterHorizonspillonglassdisksandirradiated

(照射)themwithlightusingLEDsthatsendoutwavelengths

foundinsunlight.Thetwothenchemicallyanalyzedthe

irradiatedoiltoseehowmuchwastransformedintodissolved

organiccarbon.

Themostimportantfactorsinphotodissolution,the

researchersfound,werethethicknessoftheslickandthe

wavelengthsoflight.Longerwavelengthsdissolvedlessoil,

possiblybecausetheyaremoreeasilyscatteredbywater,than

shorterwavelengths.Howlongtheoilwasexposedtolightwas

notasimportant.

Thoughtheteamdidn'tspecificallytestforseasonalor

latitudedifferences,computersimulationsbasedonthelabdata

suggestedthatthosefactors,aswellastheoil'schemical

makeup,alsomatter.

Theresearchersestimateirradiationhelpeddissolvefrom3

to17percentofsurfaceoilfromtheDeepwaterHorizonspill,

comparabletoprocessessuchasevaporationandgroundingon
