downstreamconsequenceofspendingonexperiencesratherthanthings:itcanpromoteagreatersenseofsocial
connection.
Weconductedaseriesof13experimentsinvolving1,980participants.Weaskedpeopletothinkabouteither
experientialormaterialpurchasestheyhadmadeandthenratetheirthoughtsandfeelingsaboutthosepurchaseson
nine-pointscales.Insomeofourstudies,peoplereportedfeelingmoreconnectionwithsomeonewhohadmadethe
sameexperientialpurchasethansomeonewhohadmadethesamematerialpurchase.Thisreflectsthefactthat
experientialpurchasesaremorecentraltoanindividuafsidentity:ourdatashowthatpeoplefeelmoresimilarto
andmoreconnectionwithsomeonewhopurchasesthesameexperienceasthembecausetheybelievethiskindof
consumptiontendstorepresentmoreofone'strue,essentialsenseofself.
Thesefindingsapplyevenwhenpeoplethinkabouthowtheirexperiencesdiffer.Knowingthatanotherperson
hasabetterversionofwhatyouhavecancreateasenseofsocialdistance.Whatweobserve,however,isthatthis
distancefeelslesswidewhenitcomestoexperientialpurchasescomparedwithmaterialones.
Wealsodiscoveredthatexperientialconsumptionfosters(促进)asenseofsocialconnectednessmorebroadly,
notjusttothosewhohavemadeasimilarpurchase.Peoplewhoreflectedonexperiencestheyhadacquired-
ratherthanmaterialgoods-reportedabroadersenseofconnectiontohumanity.
Finally,wefoundthatafterpeoplethinkaboutafulfillingexperience,theyexpressagreaterdesiretoengage
insocialactivitiesthantheydoaftertheyreflectonanimportantpossession.Experiencesconnectuswithothers,
andtheyprovidememoriesofsuchconnectionthatpeoplecanrevisit.Thesememories,inturn,canencourage
engagementinevenmoresociality.
Onecleartakeawayfromthisresearch——likethemanystudiesonexperientialspendingandhappinessdone
todate-isthatpeoplewouldlikelybewisetoincreasetheirspendingon“doing“ratherthan“having."Butour
workpointstoanotherimplicationaswell.Communitiescouldbenefitinmanywaysfromencouraging
experientialpursuits.Policymakerscansupportaccesstopublicparks,beachesandmuseums,forexample.
Improvedfundingfortheartsandperformancespacescanbeawayforcommunitiestoensurethatshared
experiencescontinuetobringpeopletogether.Directingresourcestowardmorecommunityengagementmight
promoteimprovementsinsocietalwell-being.

statedthatshewas“abitbusy“whenthepaperwassubmittedand“didnotdomyjobwell.^^Arnold'shonestyis
admirable,butitraisesaquestion:ArescholarsathighlycompetitiveplacessuchasHarvardandStandfordrushing
