Usingacomputerprogram,Nugentandherteammodeledagroupofasteroidssimilartorealnear-Earth
objects(NEOs).TheyfedthemintoaprogramcalledJPLHorizons.Anyonecanusethatprogramtolookup
predictedlocationsforobjectsinthesolarsystem.Forthisproject,herteamdeterminedwhethereachmodeled
asteroidwouldcrosspathswithEarth.
Thatallowedtheteamtoestimatethefrequencyofasteroidsbiggerthan140metersacross,whichisaround
thesizeofalargeship,Nugentsays.AnasteroidofthissizewouldhitEarthroughlyevery11,000years.
However,thatnumberisstillhardtounderstand.SoNugentcomparedthechancesofanasteroidhitting
Earthwithothereventsthatpeoplemayexperienceasfollows.
