Wanger’steamexploredtheenvironmentalbenefitsofreplacingsomeofthesecropswith
Camelliaoleifera.Thisplantcanyieldupto2.8tonnesofoilperhectare,secondonlytopalm
oil,andcangrowinpoorsoilandonsteephillsides.Camelliaoilisrichinoleicacid(油
酸),whichmaylowerheartdiseaseriskandhasahighersmokepointthanmanyoils,reducing
harmfulchemicalformationduringcooking.
Ifcamelliaweregrownon11%ofthelandcurrentlyusedforotheroilcrops,itcouldproduce
thesameoilvolumewhiledecreasinggreenhousegasemissionsby14%,wateruseby5%,landuse
